The Badminton Singles and Doubles Category took place today, November 22, 2023, at the Activity Center of JBLCF-B.
The Krakens had a twice-to-beat advantage coming into the finals of the First Singles and Doubles event, with the Phoenixes as their challengers. In the Second Singles, the Phoenixes are the ones who had the twice-to-beat advantage against the Krakens.
After all the powerful smashes, excellent services, and thrilling wins, the Krakens took the championships in both the Singles events but went short on capturing the Doubles Championship despite their twice-to-beat advantage against the Phoenixes.
During the First Singles Championship, Rommel Alvarez of the Red Phoenixes had multiple chances to close the first set, but the perseverance of the Krakens' Rosima helped him sn**ch the set, winning 25-23.
In the second and last set, Rosima was able to close the game by 21-15 and win the championship for the Krakens.
"First of all, I would like to thank my BSMT team and our Coach Sir Herpacio for doing our best today. Although our Doubles didn't get the championship, they still did their best. And also to our Singles who were held as champions, congratulations to us, we deserve this, and I hope we all keep on striving." said Rosima, who bagged the championship in a 2-0 fashion.
On the other side of the court, Dave Sante of the Krakens emerged victorious in the first game of the Second Singles Championship against the Phoenixes' Philip Neri Acuesa.
Acuesa went on a 21-17 start, clinching the first set, but Sante took the second set, 21-10, as well as the last set, 21-16. Acuesa started with an 11โ9 lead during the interval of the last set. However, Sante had a run and eventually took the set and the game.
With a twice-to-beat advantage, Acuesa had another opportunity to get the title but still went short as Sante stunned him and won via sweep, 21-14, 21-14.
Now in the Doubles Category, the duo of Josh Elijah Templora and Jan Francis Tadena of the Krakens had to use their twice-to-beat advantage after suffering a loss to the hands of Neil Xander Carpentero and Adrian Lue Jalea of the Red Phoenixes 21-15, 16-21, and 21-14 in the first game of the finals.
In the final match of the day, a deciding game of who would take the championship, the fiery Red Phoenixes triumphantly took the title with exciting 21-13, 18-21, and 21-17 game scores.
"I want to thank the team, the supporters who came here to watch, and of course, our coach. Thank you for all the efforts, guys. And thank you as well to God," Templora, the Team Captain of the Krakens, stated after their games.
"I think we really had great teamwork and we bond well. We actually didn't expect that our plays would be this fruitful because our goal was to just enjoy the games." Jalea of the Phoenixes' Doubles went on after earning their championship.
"Props to our opponents because they also gave their best and challenged us to a nice game, giving the audience much more entertainment," he ended.
The Golden Griffins capped 3rd place in the First and Second Singles event, while landing fourth in the Doubles event.
The Sage Hippogriffs took the 4th place in the First and Second Singles event, while earning third place in the Doubles event.
