Our Homebase didn't take to the winter rains very well, so we had a wood chipping day! We chipped wind blown alder branches and trees to nourish the soil and mud that will harden as we get further into spring. Thank you alders for sharing your branches and providing this transformation and nourishment to the to the land.

We also had a huge help from a Forest Grassroots Forest School parent who took time our out of their Saturday to hitch up the chipper and bring it to and from the land. It takes a community to bring the vision to life and we are so grateful for the support!

This past weekend we closed out the Wild Awareness teen program with nature name presentations, compass work, tarp set-up, storytelling around the fire, and herbal medicine making.

The program was such a beautiful mix of practical skills to navigate and feel safe in the wild and nature-connection practices to help navigate our internal landscape and foster earth stewardship.

We pushed ourselves to the edge physically and mentally and discovered great growth. We explored and found mindfulness on mountain tops and built community through games and storytelling.

We are so grateful for all those that participated. We look forward to another Wild Awareness program next year.

There is something so nourishing about slowing down and tapping into our ancestral skills. 💫

The slow processes of pre-treating cotton, mindfully harvesting plants, and gathering kitchen scraps to up-cycle for the magical art of dying fabric with plants allows me to remember a feeling of the past. A feeling that has been lost in this digital, a remembering of connection and community. ✨

Sharing this process with the Forest School students ignites a wonder for the magic the plant world holds and offers us. Seeing the amazement in their faces when they unravel the freshly steamed cotton is something that can’t be gained through a screen.

For a moment, I see them remembering, remembering the connection they have to the Earth. Remembering how we are all interconnected, each breath, each tissue, each cell, we are that of the same, yet unique. We are a community that thrives on reciprocity.

When we show ourselves and our children the magic of slowing down and connecting, we learn something new about ourselves. We continue to feed our desire to learn and explore in a way that protects the Earth. 💚

Slow down, explore your ancestral skills, and remember. ✨

What a difference a year makes! Right around this time last year we opened registration for our spring Forest School pilot program. Today we opened registration for our 2022/23 Forest School program.

We started off very simple and have grown with the support of community ✨

We are so grateful for everyone who has supported us in bringing this dream to reality. All the families, volunteers, staff and those that have been more behind the scenes, each and everyone of you have supported this passion project in such a meaningful way 💚

First photo is of our Homebase on April 1 2021 (the first day of our first program). Second photo is our Homebase today.

We look forward to continuing to grow and offer quality programs that re-kindle a passion for the Earth and foster a deeper sense of Self and belonging.

Much gratitude,
Liz & Nick

Exploring nature 🌲 🌧 🌱

When you spend unstructured time in nature your perspective changes. You find a deep sense of connection to yourself and discover more about the ever-evolving human you are.

The mind chatter and stresses of the non-natural world slip away and you find a vibrant community to accept you - just as you are. As you find this community, you find connection and a develop reciprocal relationship where you want to cherish and protect the natural world.

You discover a dynamic belonging with an enriched sense if place that will stay with you forever 💚

“Sometimes I feel nervous or anxious and I don’t want to do anything. My tummy hurts and I feel scared. When I go into nature and see the trees and breathe the fresh air, my tummy doesn’t hurt anymore. I feel happy and safe. I want to help nature, like it has helped me”. - Grassroots Forest School Summer Program student.

Nature offers us so much. We need to slow down and feel. It allows us to find a new way of being that helps us navigate the world in all situations. We need to pause and listen to learn how we can support the earth to give back and continue a beautiful cycle of give and take.

Do you remember exploring the forest🌲, finding new treasures and climbing trees to pass the time as a kid? Do you remember how the hours would slip by and you never wanted to come in when you heard the call for dinner?

At Grassroots our programs follow a model of 50% structured/50% child led.

The flow of the day is planned with games, nature crafts and nature-based lessons. Having a flow to the day, and easy going mentors, allows kids the time and space to be kids.

When given this space, kids develop new and innovative games, discover new bones, feathers or plants and form positive relationships. Sometimes the flow of the day changes and we take a break to enjoy some seasonal berries!

These are the times when children notice shifts in themselves as they develop stronger intrapersonal and interpersonal qualities, such as leadership, critical thinking, and communication while building meaningful and trusting relationships with their peers. 🌿

Self guided inquiry ✨

When an environment is set up in such a way to encourage self guided learning and inquiry students are drawn to make their own discoveries.

This particular day our many bone discoveries were laid out on the inquiry table with a field guide to bones displaying a variety of creatures. Without any prompting this student headed straight for the table to discover what animal a small skull belonged to. The field guide wasn’t put down for quite some time as the student continued to thumb through the pages.

When we allow kids space to discover their own interest they gain a better understanding of what interest them, who they are and gives them the opportunity to learn and grow in their abilities allowing them to build confidence.
