Cognitive Overload

Until the skill of handwriting has been automated effectively, there simply isn’t capacity in working memory to give to it during the writing process.

What you see will be evidence of a combination of factors:

- formations that have become automated to date
- time pressures
- the emotions of the writer in the moment

Replace judgement with & & chat about these things.

This is why handwriting practice needs to be a separate activity… where all attention can be directed to forming (and joins) clearly.

If you are a parent, or teacher, starting practices with a bonus picture is a really way to bring a little novelty to the process.

Our brains like novelty, like images, and we’re naturally curious.

It works a bit like an advent calendar… will be wondering what today’s picture will be!

Make this part of your practice . Start to build an album so you already have an image ready.

The picture acts as a cue to the activity coming up, and makes it more to the unconscious mind.

It doesn’t cost anything, doesn’t take much and is a great way to build (you can share photos of , or things that relate to children’s interests).

But does this goal of avoidance & choice of the seemingly easier option really benefit us?

It can be very tempting in today’s fast paced world to forget to the lessons we once learned earlier on in our lives.

This can include lessons such as to write. A skill that I’m sure many of us perhaps seem to be irrelevant right? Of course this won’t be everybody!

But it’s important to ask why.
Why is this skill still so important?
Why are we still taught how to write?
Why do we need to keep practising writing?

Whether the reason you choose not to is because you find it challenging, or simply feel as though you don’t have time…

Better handwritten recognises the importance of slowing down in our continuously lives. With the knowledge that hand writing something, allows you to be & in the moment.
