Introduction to Division before we get deep into long division. Today students read The Doorbell Rang and took their cookies and divided it amongst the people that were arriving to eat cookies in the book. We then related it to multiplication to show the relationship. And we also determined what remainders were. Of course to add on top of the fun students got to write on their tables with dry erase markers, which they thought that was the coolest thing on earth. High engagement, fun, and a yummy snack!

Another one of my favorite back to school activities! We read Sarabella’s Thinking Cap and learned how everyone can have a difficult time focusing and daydreaming of other things. Students created self portraits with their own thinking “caps” inside their brains on what they enjoy in their life or daydream about! We then hung up their self portraits up with our class promise to display all year long.

Loved this back to school activity! Read this cute book in how this backpack felt on the first day of school! Students then decorated a page with their backpack with a face describing their backpack’s feelings for school with a quick writing sample!

I can’t thank Breanna Hicks , published author of The Colorado Killer (check it out on ) enough for taking time out of her busy schedule and visiting fourth grade and discussing character development. It was wonderful to learn from you, writer to writer, and for the kids to understand that they can be just like you! I know you ignited a lot of fire in some young authors! Thanks you!

Charades

I have had the privilege this year to study with Matt Glover as we navigate theough the writing process. He has helped change my views and concept as a writing teacher and I decided to try and dabble a bit into the crafting process instead of the genre process… AND WOW! Has engagement ever been high!!!
Here were the areas of focus:
1. Put mentor text I wanted students to resemble in their writing.
2. Focus on writing conventions, application, and how it releases to prosody.
2. Have fun!
This is how the Mo Willems crafting process has turned out so far! Continue to watch as we go day by day!
