Maya Angelou: "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" 14/01/2022

American storyteller and activist Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She had a broad career as an educator, singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood’s first female black director; but was probably best known as a writer, editor, essayist, playwright, and poet. She is the recipient of the National Medal of Arts (2000) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010).

In the Penmanship Pals: Print and Penmanship Pals: Cursive classes on Outschool. com, handwriting and fine motor skills activities include copying song lyrics; making lists (i.e., active volcanoes of the world; songbirds of Central Park, NY); copying quotes of historical figures; and copying the beautiful poetry of masters, such as “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” by Maya Angelou.

This fun video was created by artist Sarah Clapp.

William Penn Adair Rogers (1879 – 1935) was an American stage and film actor, vaudeville performer, cowboy, humorist, newspaper columnist, social commentator, and all-around entertainer.

Born to a Cherokee family, Rogers became "Oklahoma's Favorite Son." He traveled the world with his live shows, made 71 films, and wrote more than 4,000 nationally-syndicated newspaper columns. By the mid-1930s, he was hugely popular in the U.S. and one of the highest paid movie stars in Hollywood. He performed a rope act on vaudeville, made radio appearances, crusaded for aviation expansion, and provided first-hand accounts of his world travels. His folksy style of humor allowed him to poke fun at controversial figures and topics in a manner that found approval from a national audience without offending many.

In the Penmanship Pals: Print and Penmanship Pals: Cursive classes on Outschool. com, handwriting and fine motor skills activities include copying poems and song lyrics, making lists (i.e., active volcanoes of the world; songbirds of Central Park, NY), and copying quotes of historical figures such as Will Rogers.

Happy July! 01/07/2021

July
By John Kendrick Bangs (1862 - 1922)
Flower and song
The whole day long!
And soft starlight
The livelong night!
And breezes sweet
To ease the heat;
And glowing fields
For harvest yields;
And dancing rain
To coax the grain;
And skies the hue
Of truest blue;
And all things green
With summer sheen
What wonder we
Who truly see
Are filled with cheer
With July here!

Happy July! A Poem To Greet The Month

Many of you have asked me, "what happens in your challenge?"

Each day, you’ll receive a short 10-minute video via email with the day's lesson. You'll be able to follow along with me if you're newer to flamenco or you can adapt the lesson for yourself if you're more experienced.

I’m also going to help you GET OVER YOURSELF.

What?

I've been dancing flamenco for something like 25 years and I *know* why flamenco dancers find it challenging to express themselves confidently for improvising. It’s hard when you don’t believe you can do it! (I just don't get it. It always trips me up. I can never get good enough.)

This challenge isn’t just about learning some marking technique.

The 4 Day Flamenco Improv Challenge is about discovering that you CAN solidify your compás, internalize marking steps, improve your hearing of the music and be able to put it all together for improvisation!

I LOVE these challenges because there is so much amazing energy coming from the dancer. Lots of community support, jaleos, and inspiration.

The videos are adaptable for ALL levels, beginners through advanced, too.

Aaaaaand, if you participate in the challenge, you have a chance to win a FREE 3 MONTH SUBSCRIPTION to the Online Flamenco Studio!

I can’t wait to dance with you.

Let's scrap the neuromyths: No, you aren't a 'visual' or 'auditory' person 28/11/2020

I agree that presenting learning materials in a variety of formats is always the best practice. But I’ve also been taught and have always believed that each of us has a dominant learning style: visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. However, the hypothesis that people learn best when information is presented in their "dominant" learning style is not scientifically based, states this article.

Let's scrap the neuromyths: No, you aren't a 'visual' or 'auditory' person Who hasn't heard the statement that we only use 10 percent of our brain? That listening to Mozart's music makes you smarter or that most learning happens in the first three years of life? Or that a person who is "right-brained" is more creative? Another widespread idea is that we are either visual,....
