Yesterday the Samoa Meteorology Division took part in a three day training of the Climate Risk Early Warning System (CREWS) in partnership with the South Pacific Regional Environmental Programme, Red Cross and the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services in an effort to equip allocated villages of Matautu and Salamumu with the right set of skills and knowledge essential for any disaster.

Complete First Aid Training, Search and Rescue as well as understanding of the atmosphere and the ocean and the causes of natural disasters were all on the discussions yesterday.

It was also an oppurtunity for us to refresh the participants of the previous awareness programme conducted in these communities.

We acknowledge the support of SPREP, and the facilitators RED CROSS & SFESA for the good work. We look forward to the next schedule.

We've got about a good hour before the Maximum Eclipse. However, the middle to upper level clouds are going to be around for most of the night. It will obscure the view at times but the Supermoon should be visible within the breaks.

It's not a guarantee we will get the perfect setting/view for the Lunar Eclipse tonight as cloudy conditions continue to hover all islands but there should be breaks within the clouds.

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earth's dark shadow, or umbra and all three bodies (Sun, Earth and Moon) are in perfect alignment. (Refer to Pic 1)

This Event is predicted to happen on the night of May 26th into the early hours of May 27th and will be visible throughout the Pacific Ocean, parts of eastern Asia, Japan, Australia, and western North America.
During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red color
A Timeline of Visibility and Colors of the Moon is attached (Refer to Pic 2)

There are no records or evidence of direct physical effects of Eclipses on humans however, this Lunar Eclipse has impacts on our Tide/Wave Heights.
The highest Tide of the month will be recorded on this day, at peak of Lunar Eclipse (Refer to Pic 3)
