Deepening and Developing Connections Workshop

ARE YOU LONELY?

If you’re like most people, you probably thought “Am I lonely? Nah. I have plenty of friends. I love my partner/family.”

But if I asked you....

“Do you feel like something is missing from your relationships? Or Do you feel like your relationships could be more fulfilling?”

I bet a quiet “yes” comes to the surface.

There is NO shame in that response. Studies have been done all over the world and up 25% of adults say they feel lonely or isolated most of the time. MOST OF THE TIME. That means, very likely, most people feel lonely at least some or a fair amount of the time.

Join Dr. Fae for the next round of Deepening and Developing Connections Workshops beginning September 16th in Thao Dien. There’s only a few spots left in the evening class, so don’t delay.

That Discomfort You’re Feeling Is Grief

There’s a lot of interesting ideas about what is going on right now for people, emotionally. Maybe this article will speak to some of your experiences.

hbr.org The coronavirus pandemic has led to a collective loss of normalcy.

Stress impacts us all differently. Remember to check in with your whole body during this difficult time. Try to take the time to yourself that little something extra. ICCD is still here to help.

Be sure to help your body stay healthy so it can help you cope.

The CDC is a good example

✳ℂ𝕙𝕖𝕔𝕜 𝕚𝕟 𝕨𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕗𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕤 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕗𝕒𝕞𝕚𝕝𝕪.
Be sure to also include conversations and questions not related to COVID-19 and allow yourself to stop conversations about COVID-19 if they start to feel overwhelming or unhelpful to you.

✳𝕂𝕖𝕖𝕡 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕕 𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕧𝕖
Passive activities like watching TV may not allow for true stress relief the way an engaging book or puzzle might.

✳ℝ𝕖𝕗𝕣𝕒𝕞𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕤 𝕥𝕚𝕞𝕖 𝕚𝕟 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕕
Take this time as an opportunity to reconnect to activities and people you generally don’t have as much time to commit to (while keeping appropriate distance of course). Read a book, start an art project, call an old friend, or practice a new skill like cooking or drawing. Remember you don’t have to be a different or more enlightened person during this time. It’s okay if these new skills and practices don’t work out in the long run.

✳𝕀𝕗 𝕪𝕠𝕦’𝕣𝕖 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕗𝕣𝕠𝕞 𝕙𝕠𝕞𝕖
Set up a specific work schedule and “office space” even if it is a specific chair at the table, or moving furniture during “work hours” in order to create mental distance from work/home.

✳𝔹𝕖 𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕕 𝕥𝕠 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕗
Remember you likely have never experienced something like this before so if you have new feelings or new struggles, that’s okay. Listen to your brain and body and take the space/action you need.

✳𝔸𝕤𝕜 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕡 𝕚𝕗 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕟𝕖𝕖𝕕 𝕚𝕥✳
If you need more support, that’s okay too. Consider making an appointment to see a mental health provider. Many of our clinicians are taking online appointments for current and new clients. Some great speech and language therapy tips for late talkers.

As parents 👨‍👧‍👦you are experts at knowing what your child wants or needs. And that’s great 👍 especially if your little one is not yet using words. But, it is also important that you provide your little ones with opportunities to communicate with you.

Look below 👀👇🏼 for some examples of how you can offer opportunities to help your child to communicate 👄 💬

Once you have done any of these things, e.g once you have offered a choice (🍎 or 🍌) or once you have given one piece of the puzzle 🧩 it is important that you WAIT ⏱ to give your child time to communicate something. It might be that they look at you or the object they want 👀, they might reach for it 👐, they might make a noise or they might attempt the word 👄. When they do any of these things, you should say the word that you would want them to say if they could so that they hear a clear model.

If your child is using some single words, e.g cars 🚗 to request their box of cars that are out of reach, you could model back a short phrase, such as “I want cars” (always say it from your little one’s point of view, e.g say “I” instead of “you”, because if they try to copy the phrase it will make sense).

As well as naming objects, e.g “biscuit” 🍪 “apple” 🍎 puzzle” 🧩 spoon” 🥄 etc, some of the words you might model are “more”, “again”, “go”, “all gone”, “uh oh” 🤭. These are good words to use as children can use them in lots of different situations, e.g to ask for more bubbles, more snack, more tickles etc.

[01/16/20]   SOCIAL SKILLS REMINDER

Please note that there will be no social skills classes on Saturday 18th or Saturday 25th January. We look forward to welcoming you back on 1st February. Have a great holiday!

[01/02/20]   SOCIAL SKILLS REMINDER! Social skills classes for ages 7-11 will recommence on Saturday 4th January at 1.30pm. If you are interested in your child joining please contact us.

SOCIAL SKILLS REMINDER: please note that social skills groups will not run on the following dates: 21st and 28th December. Thanks!

Let's Play: the speech and language way

Hello December! It's gift-giving season so, yes, my page will turn more toward toys and ideas for gifts as I am frequently asked for toys that will help a child learn to talk.

However, there actually are NO toys that, on their own, will help your child learn to fully communicate. So, it's best to remember the strategies that we can use WHILE interacting, playing, and fulfilling your baby and toddler's needs so that YOU can help your child learn to talk and communicate.

Toys are fun and can help keep your child interested in what's happening, but the real "magic" has more to do with the interaction and how you engage your child in the moment.
