Hi I noticed you have had some Agatha Christie Posts, I am lucky enough to live in the former Torre Vicarage in Torquay, Devon, England which was visited by Agatha Christie - she took tea here - and we now run the house as a bed and breakfast accommodation so that fans can walk in Agatha's footsteps! Her birthplace, Greenway and other places connected to a number of books are close by.

[BOOK REVIEW CONTEST 2019]

👉The clock is ticking and we are waiting for your submission at [email protected].

👉Let have a look at another winner of last year contest.

Getting there: a book of mentors - Gillian Zoe Segal
Winner - Vu Hoang Nhat

--------------------------------------------------
Everyday, I ask myself one question: “am I going to bed smarter than I woke up?”. To be honest, that question pushing me to read a few pages at least every night can make me wiser and more knowledgeable than the day before.

Today I’d love to share my review about one book named “Getting There - a Book of Mentors” - a collection of more than 30 interviews of the author with successful entrepreneurs, inventors, editors, Nobel prize winner, scientists, designers, school dean in different fields such as Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg, Anderson Cooper, Sara Blakely (SpanX), Craig Newmark (Craiglist), Graydon Carter (Vanity Fair editor), Nitin Nohria (Havard Business School dean)… which purpose was to dissect obstacles they faced, the setbacks they endured and the priceless lessons they
learned along their way to achieve such a successful status
today.

This book is so valuable to readers in a variety of ways ranging from students contemplating their futures to the vast majority of us facing challenges or seeking to reach our potential; in particular for those who are thirst to succeed in their career and life. Throughout the book, 30 leaders give
away not only practical and critical career advice, but also invaluable wisdom applicable to life in general to readers. Whoever and whatever state you are today, there is at least one lesson you can learn inherited from mentors’ a hard-way learning experience. After reading this book, here are the 7 main points spotted among 30 interviews:

1) Not being afraid of failure: you will find out all 30 leaders in this book experienced at least 2 to more than 10 failures along the way to the top of their career. They perceived every failure was a stepping stone on their way to success. Guess what? All of them become successful eventually. This is lesson I strongly encourage all of us should learn, believe and practice.
2) Creating your own opportunity: if you want to do something, just do it!. Don’t wait for luck to get your opportunity, you must create and grab by yourself. Be responsible for your own life.
As Anderson Cooper (primary anchor of CNN news) was ejected many times before he become a well-known international journalist - TV personality today. At the early state of his career, he found it hard to be recruited working at lowest position at Channel One. Deep inside he knew it would
take forever to climb up the corporate ladder, so he decided to quit and flied to Africa to film his own documentary by using his friend casual camera. Then he resold his film to Channel One at a cheap price and the rest is history… read the book to find out by yourself.
3) Having passion: there is nothing called “overnight success”. Well, every success requires a huge amount of efforts, sweat and tears. Readers will know and feel about what setbacks those successful people endured and persisted to overcome in order to achieve such a successful status today. It’s no surprise that passion is a key factor to help them conquer tough time of their life/career.
4) Being resilient: if you experience a failure, just bounce back and move forward. Resilience was another significant factor that help those leaders and other successful leader overcome their failures. To illustrate, Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of A Wimpy Kid series, spent his 8-year life to write but he got rejected by publishers several times before Ka-Ching point. Today, Diarary of A Wimpy Kid series are sold over 115 million copies and will be filming soon.
5) Knowing your strengths: one man cannot do all things so do you. You should do the tasks fitting your expertise. Other tasks we should assign to those who are better and smarter than us as Warren Buffet said: “There’s a whole bunch of things I don’t know a thing about. I just stay away from those. I stay within what I call my circle of competence”.
6) Pivoting: many leaders become successful by knowing how to pivot their career. Initially, they wanted to do what they want. However, things will change along the way so it’s crucial to adapt trying to do something else, which later may become your tipping point. As Michael Bloomberg would not have founded Bloomberg if he had not been fired from Solomon Brothers (American investment bank).
7) Questioning everything: successful leaders always try to be innovative in whatever endeavors they pursue/ problems they want to solve. They let the norms behind and challenge the status quo of existing problems to explore new solutions.

Let’s imagine that instead of wasting years of your lifetime to accumulate such similar hard lessons and call them your learning experience, you can consume and absorb years of experience of successful leaders in a month. Could you believe it? Yes, it’s definitely possible.

Reading a full story takes you less than 20 minutes per day so you will finish this book in a month. Priceless lessons from 30 mentors featured in this book will give you “unfair advantage” over the old you and those who haven’t read it.

Even though the path to success is never and will never be easy, GETTING THERE - A BOOK OF MENTORS is a shortcut that I firmly believe will save you a plenty of time, effort, trials and errors on the way to make your life goals reality.
