2017 Annual Conference on Southeast Asian Studies in Taiwan (ACSEAST)
Conference Theme:【ASEAN 50: Subjectivity, Multilateralism and Trans-boundary in Southeast Asia】東協50:主體、多邊與跨界的東南亞
Abstract Submission Deadline: February 20, 2017

The 19th Annual Conference on Southeast Asian Studies in Taiwan (ACSEAST) will be held from 2nd to 3rd June 2017 in Puli, Taiwan. The Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National Chi Nan University will host the 2017 ACSEAST Conference in collaboration with the Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies, RCHSS, Academia Sinica, Taiwan Association of Southeast Asian Studies, and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, National Chi Nan University. The establishment of Southeast Asian Studies in National Chi Nan University, which will be having its 20th anniversary in 2017, has grown significantly in the past two decades and while welcoming our undergraduate freshmen, we are also excited at the recollection of our journey of teaching and research. A series of commemorative activities are going to be taking place alongside the conference. We invite you to join us in Puli, a wonderland with picturesque views and friendly people.
In 2017, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will celebrate its 50th anniversary. At the same time the recently initiated “ASEAN Community 2015” (AC15), which is based on the interrelation of politics, economics and social culture, will be highlighted. However, the intense competition of the international situation challenges how ASEAN places itself with the convergence of globalized capitalism. Furthermore, the Taiwanese government has declared that mutual benefits between the nations of Southeast Asia and Taiwan are expected, although such a path will not be short of obstacles. Academics who devote their time to Southeast Asian studies also have interests and concerns about the “New Southbound Policy,” an initiative of the Government of Taiwan.
The 19th Annual Conference theme is, “ASEAN 50: Subjectivity, Multilateralism and Trans-boundary in Southeast Asia.” Under the current situation of ASEAN 50’s development, a theme has been established to lead discussions on the issues of Multilateralism and Trans-boundary, in which agents with various characteristics respond to society as well as present Subjectivity in Southeast Asia. Moreover, the Subjectivity of Southeast Asian studies during the New Southbound Policy, the suitability of potential new topics and research methods, or even introspection of academic knowledge construction can be topics related to our theme. We welcome a variety of majors and academics to take the rare opportunity to join our discussion.

----【Conference Topics】-----------------------------------------------------

The Conference theme is “ASEAN 50: Subjectivity, Multilateralism and Trans-boundary in Southeast Asia.” The organizers encourage submissions of panel proposals or individual presentations on the following subthemes:
1. The Third Ten-years of Southeast Asian Studies in Taiwan
2. Subjectivity, Multilateralism and Trans-boundary
3. ASEAN Economies: Challenges and Prospects
4. Nations and Politics
5. Faith Philosophy and Religious Movement
6. Humanitarian and Development Work
7. Environment and Society
8. Issues with Southeast Asian Studies

[“Queer” Asia Conference 2017] Desire, Decolonisation and Decriminalisation

Deadline for abstract submission: 26th Feb 2017
Dates: 16th June 2017 (Conference) – 17th June 2017 (Screenings and Workshops)
Venue: SOAS, University of London

In celebrating the drive towards decolonisation at SOAS and the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Britain, ‘Queer’ Asia is interested in diverse and new ways of representing, negotiating and mediating queer desires. With a focus on desire and its intersections with decolonisation and decriminalisation in postcolonial global societies the conference aims to examine what desire implies for queer Asians.

What do queers want? How do queers mediate their desires in the face of social opposition, legal persecution, colonial and neo-colonial impositions as well as accelerating globalisation? How is queer desire negotiated and represented both within Asia and in Asian diasporas? Does decriminalisation necessarily emancipate desire? Under what conditions can decolonisation imagine desire?

We would like to invite all those working on facets of queerness in/on Asia to submit an abstract on any of these or related areas. Papers could address, but are not limited to, the following sub-themes:

Erasure of marginalised gender expressions and some sexualities within notions of desire.
Inter-ethnic relations/intercultural/cross-cultural practices.
HIV/AIDS awareness – the globalisation of these movements in Asian contexts.
Queering power relations between groups (class, race, ethnicity, religion, age, caste).
Homonormativity and its economic, social and political ramifications.
Colonial legacies and local histories/ voices.
The performance(s) of desire(s).
The categorisations and (de)stigmatisation of queer desire.
The relevance and limitations of queer theory in Asian contexts.
Migrations and diasporas/ refugees/ asylum seekers and queerness.
Civil rights/ human rights.
Literary and visual representations.
Use of technology/ social media and new media.
How does queer activism in Asia or for Asian communities address desire?
