Operating as usual

[09/17/19]   Dear Parents, We are rebranding our Pre-School. Please stay tuned!

Focus of the Week: Inquiry

Children at EtonHouse An Phu learn through Inquiry where the teachers facilitate opportunities for the children to investigate, explore and experiment topics that are best suited to their needs and interests. The concept of Inquiry extends right across the curriculum so that an Inquiry into Animals and their Different Habitats, for example, not only involved research through the Internet, books and discussion etc but animals would feature in the art and craft sessions, animal themed games in the playground and animal shapes in cold food preparation classes etc. Literacy and numeracy are also embedded into the Inquiry and even phonics is not taught alone but linked to Inquiry etc. e.g. ‘p’ for ‘penguin’. ‘n’ for ‘North Pole’ etc. We welcome visits to the school for any parent interested in finding out more about Inquiry and our Reggio Emilia inspired approach.

Focus of the week: Using the Environment as the 3rd Teacher

Significant factors influence a child’s learning, for example the parent as teacher, the facilitator as teacher and of course the environments in which children investigate and explore. Our environments inspire and stimulate a child’s curiosity and help sustain that interest, by providing a range of fascinating resources as well as those found in the natural environment such as twigs, pebbles, plants and wildlife etc. Such environments help develop scientific curiosity and research skills etc and highlight the importance of the environment as the 3rd teacher.

Focus of the week: Cold Food Preparation

Often the skills being achieved in any session are subtle and not always obvious. For example in Cold Food Prep classes the children have lots of fun and find out how to prepare tasty and much enjoyed snacks. However, at the same time they are developing their numeracy skills, through weighing and measuring, comparing lengths and weights etc. Very often new vocabulary is gained too, such as ‘avocados’ when making guacamole, or ‘hummus’ and ‘chickpeas.’ As the sessions only involves making healthy, nutritious food, with sweet tasting food being kept to a minimum then the children are also learning about healthy and unhealthy food and how to have a healthy life style. Even when sweet tasting food is involved then only honey or fruit is used, and never chocolate or sugar etc. Food prep hygiene and health and safety also receives a special focus as children learn to wash their hands before cooking, making sure that all surfaces are clean, learn how to handle utensils safely etc.

Focus of the week: Caring for one another

Besides the development of children's academic and fine/gross motor skills and other physical aspects, at EtonHouse An Phu, we also aim to develop social skills such as how to interact with one another, with a particular emphasis on empathy and care. The children are taught from an early age to understand how other feel and how we can affect their feelings of well-being. We are so proud of the children's ability to empathize with one another and their ability to care.

Focus of the week: Recyling and Conservation

The children are taught from an early age about recycling and conservation, for example by using the reverse sides of sheets of used paper, or by being encouraged to turn off taps when not washing their hands etc. As they grow older they learn about how items that are not environmentally friendly can damage our health and that of other living creatures and habitation. They learn more and more too about pollution and how they can contribute to minimizing the risks, such as conserving energy and safely disposing of garbage etc. All of our children are encouraged to bring in items that can be recycled, on a daily or weekly basis, all year round. The items are used continually for art and craft etc. which raises children’s awareness of the great benefits of recycling and conservation etc.

FOCUS OF THE WEEK: SOCIAL SKILLS

Social skills are developed through so many different learning experiences, from the moment the children enter the learning environment, with a friendly greeting, to farewells when they leave. There are a multitude of opportunities for social skills development throughout the day, for example learning to turn take and listen to one another, working together as a team, through role play of everyday scenarios and working on Inquiry and research with the older children. Learning continues with every aspect of the school day, from learning to queue up before washing hands at snack times, to acceptable table manners when eating to making way for others entering the elevator when going on school trips etc. The development use of social skills is an integral part of our EtonHouse curriculum.

Creative and Imaginative Skills

Focus of the week: CREATIVE AND IMAGINATIVE SKILLS

Children’s creative and imaginative skills can develop and be expressed through so many different mediums. From simple mark making and dressing up to represent the world around them, children progress to role play, representations through art and craft, drama, storytelling, construction and scientific predictions etc. Children love to participate in learning experiences that stimulate their imagination and creativity, often learning to work harmoniously in pairs at the same time, or in groups, creating structures or beautiful murals etc.

LITERACY SKILLS

From a very early age children develop pre-literacy skills, through a gradual awareness that print can convey words and sounds, through using tools to mark make and later write well-formed letters, to basic sounds and words, later leading to complete sentences and conversational skills. Encouragement of a child’s imaginative creativity through various media and stimulating a love for storytelling and reading, all provide a good foundation on which to develop his or her literacy skills.

Numeracy

Children at EtonHouse are exposed to mathematical concepts from an early age, e.g. the concept of counting, shape recognition, and counting concrete items etc. Wherever possible, we embed this in the class Inquiry, in a natural and contextualized setting. Older age children learn addition and subtraction in a similar manner and all of the children are given the opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge in a real life meaningful way, for example through shopping for ingredients for cookery sessions or by weighing ingredients or comparing longer/shorter/lighter/heavier vegetable etc.

Team Working Skills

Many learning experiences which are designed to develop fine or gross motor skills, for example, or experiences to stimulate imagination and creativity, or problem solving, very often result in children developing other skills simultaneously, such as social and team working skills. Many of these experiences involve children communicating with the teacher, through discussion and questions and answers etc., and with their class peers. These types of experiences provide children with opportunities to see the benefits and rewards of working with others.

Gross Motor Skills

At EtonHouse we pay particular attention to the development of gross motor skills as well as all of the other areas of holistic development. Gross motor skills are developed through an exciting and stimulating range of learning experiences, such as physical exercise, music and movement, dance and drama and swimming etc. Often other skills are being developed simultaneously, such as the team spirit during team games, listening skills when following instructions, social skills when learning to turn take and share and the development of a sense of rhythm and balance etc.
