Position Summary:
The Mentoring Specialist will be responsible for organizing and implementing a robust mentoring program at an at-risk high school. The primary goal of this role is to engage scholars and develop prevention programs that assist in removing barriers that impede their ability to be successful. The Mentoring Coordinator will work closely with students, staff, and community partners to ensure the successful implementation of the program.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement a comprehensive mentoring program that addresses the specific needs at-risk high school scholars.
2. Recruit, screen, and train mentors who can provide guidance and support to scholars.
3. Match mentors with scholars based on compatibility and shared interests.
4. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the mentoring program, making necessary adjustments to ensure positive outcomes.
5. Provide ongoing support and guidance to mentors, including regular check-ins, training sessions, and resources.
6. Collaborate with school staff and community partners to identify and address barriers to scholar success.
7. Develop prevention programs that target specific challenges faced by at-risk scholars, such as substance abuse, bullying, and mental health.
8. Organize and facilitate workshops, seminars, and group activities that promote personal and academic growth among scholars.
9. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to the mentoring program, including mentor and scholar profiles, meeting schedules, and program evaluations.
10. Coordinate with school administration to align the mentoring program with overall school goals and initiatives.
11. Attend meetings, conferences, and professional development opportunities to stay updated on best practices in mentoring and prevention programs.
Qualifications:
• Education:
- Preferred Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
• Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with at-risk youth in an educational or community-based setting.
- Previous experience coordinating mentoring programs.
- Knowledge of evidence-based mentoring practices and prevention programs.
- Experience in developing and implementing workshops and group activities.
• Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and maintain positive relationships with scholars, mentors, and staff.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of community resources and services for at-risk youth.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
- Understanding of the barriers and challenges faced by at-risk high school scholars.
- Commitment to the academic and personal success of at-risk youth.
- Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Despite the rain our awards ceremony and field day was a huge success!
For those curious.... the staff won several games of basketball and kickball.
Tomorrow is the last day of school for scholars, and no one should be surprised when the building smells like icy hot due to our staff's achy joints. But that is the price of winning!!!!
Amauri Wilson was the recipient of the The John H Gregory award this year!
Amauri joined us here at AUSY just this school year! He also participated on our basketball team and participated in several after school enrichment programs! He played an influential part not only on the basketball team but also for his classmates!
Help us celebrate Amauri for such great accomplishments here at AUSY!
Dylon Haskins joined us here at the Academy for Urban Scholars just this school year, and in this short amount of time he has completed several credential certifications in advanced manufacturing and hospitality and tourism here at AUSY!
He has also took on the task to serve our country in the U.S Army!

Tristan Williams has been with us here at AUSY for his entire high school career! He has participated on our basketball team and also on the bowling team! He also completed several certifications through our technology program!
Tristan graduated from AUSY with a 3.756 GPA as our Class Valedictorian!

Aliyah Sands graduated from AUSY with a 3.739 GPA as our Class Salutatorian! Sands plans to attend Tri C in the fall where she plans to study Human Services! Please help us in congratulating her for all her hard work and wish her much success in her future! 🎉
