Today, you all made cry all over again for every kind word my mentors and those who knew me sent when I graduated college in 2012, Its been a rough year for me. Thank you for the reminder that I can and still do great things.
Shout out to Abby Lane the best Dream Program Board assistant ever and all the Champlain mentors who graduated yesterday.
AmeriCorps has been at our backs since day one back in 1999, when AmeriCorps Member Kathryn Ross introduced the first student mentors to some awesome kids in White River Junction, VT. Since then, AmeriCorps has launched us in new neighborhoods, built the first trails and facilities at Camp DREAM, supported thousands of mentors and families, and so much more. It's a remarkable organization, behind some of the most important social-sector organizations in our country.

This coming week is "AmeriCorps Week," a chance for us to recognize the amazing work of the over 1,000,000 AmeriCorps Members past and present. We’re looking forward to showcasing how our current AmeriCorps Members . Stay tuned…

DREAM attended Danville High School's open house this year and offered crafts and games to high school and elementary students. Some of our year-two matches had the opportunity to spend time together, and we also met a lot of new faces and welcomed two new high school mentors to the DREAM team. Danville DREAM community commitments were displayed and shared during this time as well. We are off to a great start this year and look forward to a wonderful year ahead. Thank you to all who stand in support of us and allow us to keep DREAMing!

It's been a sunny summer for our Boston youth! Just look at all that yellow storming the subway together. Our Boston programming included face painting, sack races, basketball, jungle gyms, and heading to the beach; all the best ways to celebrate the summer.

It's been a great season for our Vermont youth! At the beach, kayaking, swimming, and going on fun rides are some of the best activities for a DREAM summer. Pictured here are photos from our Upper Valley program in eastern Vermont.

What a summer for us at Camp DREAM! Thank you to all the staff that kept things going, as well as made wonderful memories with the youth who visited! Camp DREAM is an amazing resource for all of our mentees to visit and experience, and we love sharing it every summer.

We want to say a huge THANK YOU to all our AmeriCorps members, who made this past summer an incredible experience for the youth and communities we serve! Whether on trips to the ball game, exploring science experiments, kayaking, painting and just having a blast within your community, you all are the bedrock of our programming and are invaluable in closing the opportunity gap.

Play ball! Elm St. youth went to see a Lake Monsters game last week! The youth were so excited to see the players, watch the game, and enjoy a night out! It was so much fun, thank you to the Vermont Lake Monsters for hosting us!

Today was our deadline to raise $6000 for the DREAM Promise Scholarship Fund, and we are ecstatic to say we have raised all $6000! This makes us eligible for grants that will fund up to $100,000 for our DREAM youth. THANK YOU to all who donated and continue to support us in our mission to close the opportunity gap for the families and youth we serve!

This project will counteract the tuition gap challenging many DREAM youth pursuing college. The tuition gap is the gap in funds between the loans an undergraduate student can legally take out and the actual cost of college. Currently, only 4.2% of the college population is from the bottom 20% of the income bracket, while 58% is from the top 20%. Behind these numbers is a trend of decreased federal support and loans for students in low-income housing (Kayla Dwyer, 2017). We will use everything we raise during A Community Thrives to match funds our sites will raise in the fall for the Promise Fund, dollar for dollar.

Elm St. DREAM has been up to some scientific fun this summer!

Last week, some of our youth got to do a science lab with Dr. Emily Bruce, a microbiology professor at UVM, and her lab staff. The mentees learned about scientific formulas, reactions, and how to make elephant toothpaste! Afterwards, the lab staff gave the youth a tour of their laboratory. Our mentees learned what a scientist's job would be like, and as Yasin (7) said after participating in this science lab day, "I learned that science can be fun!"

Just five days until our deadline to raise $6000 for The DREAM Promise Scholarship Fund! We have the amazing opportunity to make college more affordable for our college-aspiring mentees, but we need your help!

Through the DREAM Promise Scholarship Fund, 529 college savings plans will be set up for our college-aspiring mentees. But we need your help in raising funds for this DREAM! Follow the link https://buff.ly/3Ov4Y3X to DONATE today!

It takes approximately $20,000 to fill the tuition gap for one student. If we can raise at least $6000 by August 12th, we become eligible for grants that can take us to our ultimate goal of $100,000.

DREAM students attended the Cabot Arts and Music Festival. The students assisted in creating a community mural, as well as volunteering to help set up some great games. The kids recognized the songs of the Native American drumming group as they have visited the school. Students met vendors, chatted with community members, and met some familiar faces that they have seen at other events as well! Our kids are thriving becoming a part of their community and learning about the resources that surround them.

We recently learned of the passing of a wonderful person, an incredible soul and DREAMer, Megan Greiling. Megan passed away much too early in her young life, on Saturday, June 11, 2022. An excerpt from her obituary reads, “Megan quietly struggled with depression for most of her adult life. Yet through it all, she was always the first to ask how we were doing, what she could do to help, or which mountain she could move for us. Megan brought so much light into this world through her art, service work, and tireless activism. She was a fierce friend to many, an inspiration to her brother, and loved dearly by her family.”

Megan spent more than two years in Vermont, living with new friends and serving to close the opportunity gap for kids throughout Vermont through her AmeriCorps role with DREAM. She had a tremendously positive impact on many and we know that those that knew her were appreciative of her friendship, love, and care.

A group of DREAMers will be hosting a Celebration of Life for Megan on August 20th at Mt. Philo, sharing a hike to the top. Anyone who knew Megan and wants to celebrate her is welcome. Please contact Kelsea at [email protected] for additional details about joining.

Additionally, if you or a loved one are struggling, please call the new 9-8-8 Crisis Hotline for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis or any other kind of emotional distress.

DREAM Elm St. has been keeping busy this summer!

On Wednesday, June 26th, they hiked up and down Mount Philo in Charlotte, VT. Pictured above is Mlassi (8) taking in the view at the top of the mile-length trail. DREAM youth loved being active and learning more about the local habitat.

On Friday, July 1st they visited the Burlington Waterfront and the ECHO Leahy Center. The , Leahy Center for Lake Champlain is a non-profit organization committed to inspiring and engaging families in the joy of scientific discovery and promoting care for Lake Champlain. DREAM youth loved the various interactive exhibits and activities offered by ECHO, learning important scientific principles in the process. Pictured above is Sumaili (11) on ECHO's deck overlooking Lake Champlain.

One of our campers on their experience at camp:
"DREAM camp was so much fun! My first thought when I got there was that I would meet a lot of new people and make new friends. I really liked when we had a camp fire and painting rocks. I have never been away from home. This was a new experience for me. I’m looking forward to next year! I really hope next summer DREAM camp will be two weeks."

Camp DREAM Session 2: Under the Sea! We had a wonderful week full of water themed activities. Our amazing chefs Jenna and Mia had several themed meals (including a fruit shark!). We competed in kayak relay races and fire building competitions, and used our creativity to make shaving cream sea creatures!

We still have room for our upcoming sessions! Head to our website at www.dreamprogram.org to register.

Through their Charitable Grants Fund, donated two kayaks, paddles, water-tight map cases, and a bunch of water shoes to the DREAM program early this month. These supplies will significantly improve our water activities at Metcalf Pond, particularly this summer's "Under the Sea" and "Camp Black DREAM: Live Waters" sessions at Camp. For many campers, this will be their first experience kayaking on the water. We are thrilled give them access to these resources both this summer and for many to come!

DREAM is proud to partner with the Outdoor Gear Exchange again this year. Not only are are they our Burlington-based neighbors, they also share out commitment to make the outdoors more accessible to populations historically excluded from it.
