This week we held our annual Start-Up Institute, a required training for all State and National AmeriCorps Program Directors. This is the time we dedicate to educating ourselves, talking about various hopes and dreams, getting advice and most of all connecting with each other. We have an incredible team that puts up with ALOT to ensure we are helping Nevadans in quite a few areas. We sincerely thank each one of you for your passion, and YOUR service.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has introduced legislation to create a National Climate Service Corps within AmeriCorps, prioritizing climate resiliency projects and a green jobs economy. Each year, AmeriCorps volunteers serving with Friends give thousands of hours back to public lands in Nevada through our partnership with Nevada Outdoor School, and we are thrilled to see a potential expansion of the program.

“A climate service corps will help protect Nevada’s environment, combat climate change, and jumpstart the careers of young Nevadans looking to give back to their communities and gain experience for the green jobs of the future,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Nevada is already facing the impacts of climate change with increased droughts and wildfires, and these effects hit the most vulnerable Nevadans the hardest, including communities of color and seniors. We must ensure the next generation has the tools, experience, and support they need to lead the charge in protecting our Nevada families and preserving our public land.”

Nevada Outdoor School

The holiday giving season is here, and we invite you to share in the celebration with us on Giving Tuesday! Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving back. On November 29, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, you’ll have the chance to join people around the world and support a cause close to your heart. This Giving Tuesday, help us in our mission of providing outdoor education opportunities that inspire people of all ages to get outside and explore responsibly. By joining the movement, you are providing funding for supplies and fuel expenses for us to travel statewide with the education materials to teach others the importance of responsible outdoor recreation.
Mark your calendars, spread the word, share with your friends and family and stay tuned for more details! To donate now or next week, go to our event page to contribute to Nevada Outdoor School.

WHAT IS NATURE-DEFICIT DISORDER? | Children and Nature Network

Did you know that there is such a thing as Nature-Deficit Disorder? In the October 2019 blog on childrenandnature.org author Richard Louv defines Nature-Deficit Disorder. He also asks a very important question of “What could our lives and our children’s lives be like if our days and nights were as immersed in nature as they are in technology?”. How would your life be different if you spent more time outside and disconnected from technology?
https://www.childrenandnature.org/resources/what-is-nature-deficit-disorder/

WHAT IS NATURE-DEFICIT DISORDER? | Children and Nature Network "Why should we tolerate a diet of weak poisons, a home in insipid surroundings, a circle of acquaintances who are not quite our enemies, the noise of motors with just enough relief to prevent insanity? Who would want to live in a world which is just not quite fatal?" Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Employee Giving Campaigns through your employer are an easy and helpful way for you to give to your favorite nonprofit organization or charity in your own community. Your employer typically matches these tax-deductible giving plans, in some way. Here at Nevada Outdoor School we have two of these types of relationships established. One with the Nevada Gold Mines Heritage Fund and one with the Southwest Gas Fuel for Life Fund. Thank you to those that are giving either monthly or annually this way to support our Youth, Training and Healthy Community Programs. We are able to do what we do because of you! You are making a meaningful impact on our participants, students and their families by helping to ensure that most of our programs are offered for free and available to all.
If you work for a company that has this sort of giving opportunity and we are not on their list of recipients, but you would like to begin giving to support Nevada Outdoor School, please reach out to me and I will make the contact and explore that possibility. We are grateful that you are looking out for us!

With the holiday season quickly approaching, we would like to offer a challenge for our viewers and participants! How many things can you reuse before Christmas? Maybe it is an old gift bag, a glass bottle for plants, an old food container for those Thanksgiving leftovers! Whatever it is, take a picture and tag us or comment on this post so we can all share those creative reusable ideas!! Interested in learning more about reusing? Thank you to TC Energy for your generous $30,000 donation to Nevada Outdoor School to support our Nature in My World Program for rural, Northern Nevada youth.
Nature in My World is a school-based nature education program for K-4th grade students which consists of grade-level specific outdoor field experiences and supplemental classroom lessons. The overall goal of Nature in My World is to inspire and encourage students to deepen their connection to, understanding of and respect for the natural world by providing opportunities for youth to get outside and experience nature in their world.
TC Energy is one of North America’s leading energy infrastructure companies with operations in natural gas, oil and power industries head quartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Their current reach includes Northern Nevada and they are committed to caring for the environment and minimizing their impact, which aligns well with NOS's mission and core values. They are working hard to make a positive difference in the communities they serve and Nevada Outdoor School is grateful for the recognition and support.

Throwback to our Leave No Trace Plan Ahead Hike in Elko! This hike was held on Friday, October 14th at the Talbot Trail in Lamoille. Participants learned about the 7 Leave No Trace Principles and how to plan ahead and be prepared for any outdoor activity. For the first time, we also had every participant bring their own reusable mug or cup for hot chocolate!! This was a huge success and we encourage any future participants to also bring a reusable for any future events but don’t worry, we will still bring cups just in case!

Here at Nevada Outdoor School, we talk about Leave No Trace a lot! It is ingrained into not only our working lives but our everyday lives as well. Many of us find ourselves practicing or thinking about Leave No Trace every day which is why we find it so important to share bring awareness to our communities. We have recently sent two of our staff members to become Master Educators which means we can offer our communities more trainings and awareness in Leave No Trace. Do you have a business or hobby that means you spend a lot of time outdoors? Well, reach out to us and we can arrange a Leave No Trace Awareness workshop for you and others!! These workshops are outdoors and filled with fun games and activities to get you thinking about how to be safe and responsible while recreating outdoors.
