CITY OF TULLAHOMA NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:
Director of Public Works, Butch Taylor, 931.454.1768

Volunteers Needed:
Tullahoma Community Spring Beautification Day

Saturday, April 24 from 8:00 am until 11:00am volunteers are asked to help spring clean Tullahoma in the Community Beautification Day. Volunteers can report to Public Works for tools, safety vests and assignments between 8:00 and 9:00 am. Citizens are also encouraged to do their own cleaning without Public Works if they do not need to report service hours.

“Getting litter picked-up is critical to the vibrancy of our City,” said Director of Public Works, Butch Taylor. “We ask residents to not litter. With your help, we can go a long way in keeping Tullahoma clean and beautiful. It is simple to keep the garbage with you and throw it away and recycle it at home or at a gas station.”

“We want Tullahomans to care enough to help us keep our roads free of litter,” said Director of Community Development, Winston Brooks. “

Concerned citizens can take action by reporting litter when you witness littering from vehicles on the roadways to 1-877-8-LITTER. If you get the license plate, they’ll hear from the state. The letter will include information about how to contain their litter and inform them that litterers can be fined up to $1,500. Residents can also report hot spots to Public Works at 454-1768.

To report an area needing to be cleaned, call Public Works prior to the event.

This is also about awareness. If you Organize your church group, business, or even family and join in making a difference by helping to clean up Tullahoma, any day works to keep our community clean.

If you want to be officially counted for service hours, Volunteers should call Public Works at 931-454-1768 to sign up and then meet between 8:00-9:00 a.m. at the Tullahoma Public Works Department, 942 Maplewood Avenue for supplies and assignments the day of the event.

Waste Less Thanksgiving. You can can make a big difference.

Waste Less Thanksgiving. You can make a big difference. Your power is very real! When a large group of people makes small changes that reduce, reuse and recycle, we can make a greater impact on reducing the litter in our streets, plastic waste in our waterways, and carbon in our air.

Nearly 90,000 people across America have taken the Keep America Beautiful® pledge and they are taking steps to make their Thanksgiving greener. Here are eco-friendly Thanksgiving tips to add sustainability to your holiday:

* Go natural.
Decorate with nature. Bring pine branches, pinecones, acorns, and colorful leaves into your home. It will add fragrant beauty to your table. And after the holiday, these decorations can all be returned to nature.
* Shop locally.
Try shopping at a farmer's market near you. Local foods require fewer greenhouse gases to get to you, and are usually grown on smaller farms using more sustainable practices.
* Reuse
like your grandma did. Set the table with reusable dish dishes and cloth napkins. Cook using a roasting pan. If single-use is your choice, be sure to purchase disposable plates, cups, napkins, and utensils made from 100 percent recycled materials.
* Reduce food waste.
Tons of food will be scraped into the garbage this Thanksgiving. Start with smaller portions to reduce this waste.
* Repurpose.
One of the best parts of Thanksgiving dinner is the leftovers. Store in reusable containers with reusable lids, and try making a delicious stock for soups, chilis and stews with what is left of the turkey.
* Recycle.
The Metal Food Cans, Aluminum Cans, Cardboard boxes, Plastic Bottles and Jugs
* Give back to the community. Volunteer at a food bank or donate extra unused food to a shelter.
* If food banks are not allowing volunteers, grocery shop for a neighbor in need. Giving back to those around you is a powerful feeling.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

Eco-Friendly Valentine’s Gift Guide for Her
Lisa Beres February 5, 2019
The Bouqs Co. mini succulent plants in ceramic planters

Nothing kills the romance like repetition and predictability. Why then, do so many guys gift the same mundane tokens of affection year after year? (Hint: dinner, roses, and chocolates are so 2018.)

If you’re feeling fatigued from the repetitive drudgery of sending last minute, soon-to-wilt flowers or carb- and sugar-laden chocolates, then its time to move beyond the disposable and heart-unhealthy gift-giving of the past. Spark some originality this year by showing the fab female in your life that you care about her, her health, animal welfare, and the environment. Sorry Victoria’s Secret, but socially conscious is the new sexy.

Love is patient. Love is kind. But, no one ever said love had to be boring. So, whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day, treat the lady in your life to something she’ll appreciate and that reflects her values. Here are some great ideas to get you started.

1. A Nontoxic Skincare Subscription Box
Love Goodly Box
LOVE GOODLY BOX

Be a true love by helping her kick the unhealthy skincare habit. Love Goodly is a subscription box that shouts affection from their cardboard box tops, which are recycled and use plant dyes. Delivered every two months, each beauty and wellness box contains full-sized, vegan, 100 percent nontoxic, and cruelty-free beauty products. Think skincare and wellness products, healthy snacks, and eco-style accessories. Their February/March box also happens to be palm-oil-free with sales benefitting the Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Each box has an $80 retail value.

The February/March box includes Flower Mill’s Balm Shell facial cleansing balm. Great for makeup removal or as an overnight hydration mask, the blend of small batch oils consists of rose hip seed, lavender, and neroli. The box also contains Zatik Gratitude Face Serum. Let’s just say, I’ve been using it, and the love affair is real. A delightful sea and earth mixture, it’s made with organic herbs and something called oligosaccharide (that’s marine algae and seaweed to you and me). This serum offers perfect hydration for the dry, winter months. Another goody is the Aisling Organics Duel-Sided Luxe Shadow Brush, a cruelty-free duel-sided eye brush.

Finally, and to celebrate Valentine’s Day, this box contains Fine & Raw Chocolate. As a vegan myself, I was all taste buds devouring this mighty square of raw, dark vegan chocolate heaven. And, since cacao is a superfood, it’s (almost) guilt-free.

2. Organic Skincare, Body Care, Hair Care, & Cosmetics
SUZANNE Organics 4-piece skincare kit
SUZANNE ORGANICS 4-PIECE SKINCARE KIT

Sure, at age 72, she may still be a blond bombshell, but the real Suzanne Somers is a far cry from ditzy Chrissy Snow from the 1970s sitcom, Three’s Company. Suzanne has dedicated her life to helping others eliminate toxins, and — 25 published books and a ThighMaster later — she’s still going strong with her online retail shop, SuzanneSomers.com. You’ll find her line of SUZANNE Organics includes skincare and body care, hair care, cosmetics, toxin-free home cleaning supplies, and supplements that are Certified ToxicFree!

Her anti-aging Organics 4-Piece Skincare Kit will have your gal glowing via the Everyday Cleanser, the Peach Exfoliating Cleanser, the Calming Toner, and the Bioactive Moisturizer. The collection is proudly made in the USA, is gluten-free, cruelty-free, and toxic-free. Plus, you’ll receive 25 percent off all toxic-free makeup with promo code MAKEUP25 through Valentine’s Day. And, you’ll always enjoy free shipping with any order over $100.00.

3. Eco-Friendly Greenery
The Bouqs Co. ornamental plants
THE BOUQS COMPANY ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

While many people reach for the low-hanging flower bouquet to express their devotion, why not consider sending eco-friendly succulents, air plants, and other ornamental greens from The Bouqs Company instead? Not only will they last longer, but some plants help purify your indoor air.

According to research by NASA, plants such as peace lilies, spider plants, and English ivy can filter common indoor toxins such as formaldehyde, asbestos, and carbon monoxide from the air you breathe. But the green buck doesn’t stop there. Research reveals plants can reduce stress and anxiety just by touching and smelling them. And if that’s not enough, plants have been found in a study by the University of Exeter to increase creativity and productivity of employees by around 40 percent in their workplaces.

4. T-Shirts with Heart
For Days organic T-shirt
FOR DAYS ORGANIC T-SHIRT

Landfills are not sexy. The average American sends over 80 pounds of clothing waste to landfills each year. Yikes!

But, if your girl is a T-shirts and jeans kinda gal, she (and you) will love For Days. A zero-waste membership site for tees, you select the number of T-shirts you want — from tanks and V-necks to sweatshirts and crop tops. Wear, stain, rip, or stretch your tees worry-free; you can order a fresh For Days T-shirt anytime for a mere $8. When you’ve worn out your tees, send them back and For Days will recycle them into new yarn, making this a closed loop system. The fabrics are 100 percent organic, recyclable, and stylish.

Let’s recap: She’ll look great, you’ll save money, and everyone saves the planet. Sounds like win-win Valentine’s gift to me.

5. Nontoxic Cookware
Le Creuset bakeware
LE CREUSET VALENTINE’S BAKEWARE

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach (my husband is no exception). So, why not heat things up in the kitchen with healthy cookware that’s pretty Insta-worthy, too? Not only does Le Creuset cookware contain no nasty PFCs found in most nonstick cookware, but it’s also energy efficient.

Le Creuset’s cookware requires just a low to medium heat to evenly distribute heat and is dishwasher, freezer, and oven safe. Whether she cooks for you, or you for her, hearts will be fluttering with Le Creuset’s vast array of Valentine’s Day-inspired enameled, cast-iron cookware and stoneware. Take a gander at the Heart Cocotte, Petite Heart Cocotte, or Heart Baking Dish, for starters. Plus, every girl appreciates a gift with purchase and right now, you’ll receive two heart ramekins with a $150 purchase using code LOVE.

I hope Cupid strikes your green heart this year and you to choose spend your money on Valentine’s gifts that are healthy for your loved one and safe for the planet.

Skip the Plastic Wrap: 4 Food Wrap Alternatives

Lauren Murphy July 9, 2018

Food wr choices haapapve loned on petroleum-base options, but yoiu okften seen at potlucks and in fridges full of leftovers. You might know it as Saran Wrap, a trademark of S.C. Johnson, or shrink wrap. Though many film plastics are recyclable, cling wrap is not.
Most cling wrap is made from polyvinyl chlorides (PVC), a flexible form of plastic used in a variety of U.S. goods. PVC releases dioxin, a toxin known to cause reproductive and developmental human health issues, during manufacture, use, and disposal.
Those who have used cling wrap know it’s not reusable — it sticks to itself so well that using it even once can be tough — meaning each piece of cling wrap we use ends up contaminating the environment or sitting in a landfill. PVC can take up to a thousand years to degrade.

Research suggests the potentially toxic plastics in our cling wrap leach into our food and drink. Because PVC is a known carcinogen and suspected endocrine disruptor, this can be detrimental to human health.
Avoid human and environmental contamination by ditching plastic cling wrap and trying some of these sustainable alternatives.

Beeswax Wrap

Need to store your leftover lunch, a half-eaten block of cheese, a chunk of bread? Beeswax food wraps have it covered (literally). This reusable and plastic-free option infuses organic cotton with naturally malleable beeswax to create a sustainable cling wrap alternative. Beeswax wrap keeps food fresh and is delightfully versatile. Buy your own Bee’s Wrap or turn it into a DIY project with friends.

Glass Containers

Glass jars are staples in every zero-waster’s toolkit. They’re washable, reusable, and recyclable. The material’s durability makes it a top choice for endlessly reusable containers that don’t pose health risks.
Reusable glass containers are becoming more common in retail food packaging, sometimes requiring a small deposit that’s refunded when you return the empty container. That’s a big win for green-minded shoppers.
Many health food stores allow the use of your own reusable containers at the bulk bins, too. If you don’t have jars the right shape for your needs, a variety of glass and metal food storage containers are commercially available. Just remember to write down the tare weight of your containers before filling up.

Cloth Wrapping

Make your own elastic and cloth bowl coversor use the Japanese cloth wrapping technique, furoshiki, as food wrap. You can purchase furoshiki wrapping cloth or just use any square or rectangular fabric for furoshiki wrapping techniques.
You can easily wash and reuse cloth wraps over and over. Flat cloth wraps have multiple uses — napkins, tablecloths, picnic blankets — while handy reusable bowl covers make for an easy, snug-fitting transition from cling wrap.

Soy Wax Paper

Conventional wax paper contains paraffin wax, which is linked to a multitude of health conditions including poor circulation and diabetes. Plus, it’s not recyclable.
Soy wax paper is a more sustainable choice. It’s compostable, non-toxic, and often made with sustainable ingredients. Soy wax or parchment paper is a safe and eco-friendly way to save food while keeping flavor and freshness in.
Wax paper is perfect for packaging baked goods, produce, and deli items. Is your local grocer on board with this sustainable packaging option?
Whatever you choose, food wraps that are non-toxic, compostable, and organically sourced are the best way to keep your meals and cooking ingredients fresh.
