My colleagues from other Capital District Montessori schools and I joined Montessori educators from 27 countries at in Nashville, Tennessee last weekend! Investing in professional development opportunities like this is an investment in our own learning. It was wonderful to reconnect with Montessorians from all over the world in real life after several years apart. Standout speakers were Ashley Judd and Michael Thompson, Ph.D.

I was happy to catch up with several members of my Center for Montessori Education / New York training cohort as well.

The Capital District crew enjoyed an evening out in downtown Nashville, beginning with a fabulous dinner at Bourbon Steak.

We all returned home from Nashville feeling inspired and reenergized in our work. Next year, Boston!
As a graduate from many years ago, I wonder if CMTE-NY has materials available for purchase like the Time Line of Life, or some of the other materials we were provided with back in the day? I'd like to get some of my older materials replaced. Thank you in advance!
in this time of safe harbor (aka lock down), I decided to make some videos for kids that may enjoy or need some mindfulness fun in their days. If you have a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, friend, etc. that comes to mind, please check out my channel - like and subscribe!

I am very proud to announce that the Montessori Children's Center has achieved the honor of being recognized by the American Montessori Society as a Verified Montessori School. This means we meet the core principles of Montessori: 1) Our Head teachers have Montessori credentials at the level they teach. 2) All classrooms contain all the required Montessori inventory. 3) Every class has mixed age groupings (infants 3-18 months; toddlers 18-36 months; preschool 3-6 years). 4) Children have long, uninterrupted work periods to develop concentration and pursue their interests while learning in an environment that supports their agency, freedom of movement, development of independence, and interconnection to others and the world. We thank our teachers for upholding these important principles and are grateful to AMS for acknowledging our commitment to sustaining an authentic community of Montessori education and philosophy with this distinction.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Bretta Weiss Wolff, Coordinator of the CMTE Administrator Course and Second National Director of the American Montessori Society.
What a beautiful life she led, dedicated to Montessori, her friends, and her family.
A dear friend to my mother, Carole Wolfe Korngold, a wonderful support and inspiration to everyone connected to CMTE, and a great mentor to me.
We will miss her wisdom, experience, joy, generosity and brilliance!
Her life was truly remarkable in the path she helped create for so many Montessori children, teachers, educators and administrators!

On Sunday, July 25, 2021 over 70 people gathered at the Montessori Children's Center in West Harrison, NY to dedicate the center in honor of Carole Wolfe Korngold, who passed away in November 2019.

Carole Wolfe Korngold was Past President and long time board member of AMS, founder of the Center for Montessori Education|NY, the first AMS program to offer an Infant and Toddler Montessori credential course and the first to offer an AMS Administrator Course, as well as the first to offer an Elementary 6-9, 9-12 with an integrated curriculum. She founded the Montessori Children's Center at Burke, one of the first full-time year round Montessori child care programs in the United States. At one time, CMTE|NY had 18 additional locations from Alaska to Puerto Rico. Carole was a beloved and world-wide recognized Montessori leader. She received the George Arents Award from Syracuse University (also awarded to President Joe Biden). The George Arents Award is Syracuse University's highest alumni honor. The University recognizes outstanding alumni who have carved careers as pioneers and leaders in their fields. She received the Living Legacy Award from AMS in 2000.

Speaking at the dedication:

Richard Ungerer, Former Executive Director of AMS
Pat Werner, Founding Head of the Washington Montessori School, in Washington Connecticut and founder, along with Carole Wolfe Korngold of the first AMS Administrator Course;
Nancy Rose, Former AMS Board Member, Founder and Executive Director of NECCA, Founder of the Montessori Teachers Association of Colorado, and Founder of the Rocky Mountain Teacher Training program (now MECR). Nancy was responsible for changing the non-discriminationstatement at AMS to state that AMS would not discriminate based on sexual orientation. This was a radical change ahead of its time.

We are very sad to let you know that our beloved founder, Carole Wolfe Korngold, died peacefully in her home in Boulder, CO on November 3, 2019. Carole was an inspiring, innovative leader of the Montessori education movement. She was Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Montessori Education|NY (CMTE|NY & CME|NY), one of the largest teacher education programs offering courses leading to credentials for Montessori teachers and administrators. At one time she oversaw 18 locations from Hawaii to Alaska. She was a leader in the spread of Montessori to the public sector, helping to train teachers and administrators in over 50 public schools nationwide.

She served on the American Montessori Society (AMS) board from 1985–1991 and as President from 1989-1991. In 2000, Carole was honored as the AMS Living Legacy, a tribute to a highly respected Montessori educator whose dedication and leadership has made a lasting impact. In 2012, she received a Wisdom of the Elders award from the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE).

The first in her family to attend college, she was the recipient of a George Arents Award from Syracuse University, the school’s highest alumni honor presented to alumni who have made outstanding contributions in their field.

In 1968, she ran the first Montessori training for head start teachers at SUNY Albany; her daughters, K.T. and Jamie were in the initial demonstration class. She founded the Montessori School of Albany. In 1991, she founded the Montessori Children’s Center, one of the first year-round, full-day Montessori childcare centers in the United States, which continues to be a model for high quality authentic Montessori for infants, toddlers and pre-school children. CMTE was the first to offer an AMS accredited teacher education program leading to an AMS Montessori infant and toddler credential. Many of the practices found in Montessori programs were developed by CMTE. And CMTE|NY was the first to offer a course for an AMS Administrator credential.

She participated in the White House Conference on Early Childhood Development with President Clinton and Co-Chaired the Montessori International Congress in Rome, Italy.

Carole had a BA (Syracuse University), an MA (Manhattanville College), an AMS Early Childhood credential (Albany), an AMS Infant and Toddler credential (CMTE/NY). Carole was adjunct professor at The College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY and adjunct at Chaminade University, Honolulu, Hawaii.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Korngold, daughter K.T. Korngold and husband Michael Whaley and their children Sarah Korngold Whaley and Emma Korngold Whaley of Stamford, CT and her daughter Rabbi Jamie Korngold, and her daughters, Sadie Korngold Finkelstein and Ori Korngold Finkelstein of Boulder, CO.

A valued, esteemed, and beloved leader of the Montessori community, Carole touched hearts and minds for decades, always inspiring the best in people. She encouraged the development of every person’s potential and truly left her mark on this world. She will be dearly missed.

Donations may be made in honor of Carole to AMS https://amshq.org/About-AMS/Donate to celebrate her generosity in nurturing Montessori programs, schools, families, and children throughout the years.

We thank you for your remembrances.

‘Help Me to Do it Myself!’ 04/29/2019

Check out my recent article on Montessori Toddlers in Westchester Family Magazine "Help Me to Do it Myself!"
https://www.westchesterfamily.com/stories/2019/5/wf-feature-montessori-2019-5.html

“We chose Montessori because we wanted our toddler to experience independence and develop confidence. For our daughter that has meant, “I can do it” and “I want to do it!” — B. Patel, Montessori parent

How do Montessori programs foster independence in toddlers? From a very young age, children are supported in learning to do things for themselves, rather than having things done for them. Montessori teachers give toddlers “just enough help.” In this way, the environment helps toddlers develop confidence by actually learning how to do things for themselves.

Being independent lays the foundation for a strong sense of self and for having healthy relationships later in life. Toddlers learn to take off and put on their coat and their shoes. They learn how to wipe the mucus from their nose. They learn how to wash their hands and how to use the toilet. Toddlers learn how to pour a drink into a cup, how to carry a tray, how to safely carry a chair. Toddlers also learn how to clean up a spill, because spills can happen. In this way, toddlers are free to move around the environment: to get a drink of water whenever they are thirsty; to move the chair if they want to sit in another spot; to safely carry their activities from the shelf to the table or floor. Toddlers feel a sense of connection to the larger community because they contribute to the whole: by setting up lunch, watering the plants, putting their work away when they have completed it if they are able, and giving assistance to a friend.

The teacher’s role
A Montessori toddler program is based on Dr. Montessori’s ideas and writing, which reflect the importance of meeting the development needs of toddlers and the importance of creating a prepared learning environment to meet those specific needs. The head teacher in a Montessori toddler program has had training in children ages birth to 3 and holds a Montessori teaching credential for that age group. This training informs not only the specific design of the environment, it also guides the adult in the practices and techniques for working with very young children, as well as the art of observation and the process of ongoing self-reflection.

I’m reflecting about the news today regarding the corruption scandal in the college entry system. I believe this is no surprise. This is what happens when every child needs to hear “good job” to feel satisfied and when high school seniors need to get into the “right” college to feel smart, or when students need to get an “A” to feel they have learned and when people have to compete against others and win in order to achieve. This is what happens when parents need their child to be the best, prettiest, most handsome, smartest, most athletic, most talented, and to get accepted to the “best” college in order to feel they have been a good mom or dad. This is what happens when our culture values, celebrates and focuses on extrinsic motivation and external values: folks cheat to get their children into college.

What will it take to get the focus off the external?

Maria Montessori was a revolutionary in her time and her vision is needed now more then ever. Come take a look at Montessori. It’s not about academic achievement or good grades or getting into an Ivy League school. It’s about the process of learning, of being, of discovering, of making mistakes, of becoming connected.

And that makes all the difference.
