Way to go, Heather! I am honored and proud to be your work colleague.
#September is National #RecoveryMonth, and each week Carroll County Health Department will be introducing you to one of our Peer Recovery Specialists. Meet Heather Lee Asbury!
"My name is Heather Asbury. I am a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist at the Carroll County Health Department. My role here is to help individuals with substance use disorder and mental health conditions achieve and maintain recovery, whatever that looks like to them. I am a person in long term recovery and what that means to me is that I have not had the desire or the need to use a mood or mind altering substance since November 19, 2013. It has been found that individuals that live with substance use disorder are more comfortable opening up and receiving help from someone who can say "me too." Each day, I strive to live a life of recovery, not only for myself, but to serve as a role model to those who are entering recovery. I know what it's like to be stuck in addiction, with no way out. I know what it's like to feel completely hopeless, helpless and unworthy. The only friend I had was drugs. As a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and someone in recovery, I can be that glimmer of hope for someone. I will believe in you until you can believe in yourself. I have extensive training to help you navigate early recovery and work with you to get connected to resources that will build your recovery capital. I have such a strong passion for helping others! I never lose hope because someone never lost hope in me!"
Our Peer Recovery Specialists are a great resource for anyone who wants to get into recovery but isn't sure where to start or what recovery might look like for them. To contact Heather or another Peer at CCHD, call 410-876-4449 during business hours and ask to speak to a Peer.

I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.
