Support the Literacy Council of Carroll County today and help us make a lasting, life-changing impact on the lives of adult learners. Your donations make possible the efforts of our dedicated volunteer tutors and adult learners.

What does this mean in real terms? It means:
With support from a tutor-mentor, a student applied for a more secure job with good benefits, improving the lives of an entire family.
With individual tutoring, a student successfully passed a class needed to obtain certification for a new career in a medical field.
Working with a tutor, a student studied for the citizenship test, learned more about American culture, and became an American citizen.
Please support the Literacy Council this GivingTuesday so we can continue to support adult learners in Carroll County.

Governor Hogan issues Proclamation for Reading and Financial Literacy Month.

[09/30/19]   Annapolis, MD – September 27, 2019- Governor Larry Hogan proclaimed October 1 to October 31 as Reading and Financial Literacy Month in Maryland. As part of the announcement, Governor Hogan encouraged Marylanders to participate in Read Across Maryland, the annual program launched by the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Inc. in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives.

“Literacy has the power to change families for the better, build professional and personal skills, and expand our worldview. Literacy is essential for education,” said Governor Hogan. “Read Across Maryland will go beyond just reading a book. It will connect different generations and ethnic groups together, include libraries geared for the disabled, blind, and deaf and hard of hearing, as well as allow experiences in reading through innovative technologies for digital natives.”

In cities and towns across Maryland, educators, students, librarians, legislators, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others will develop Read Across Maryland activities to bring reading and financial literacy excitement to people of all ages, with the goal of equipping them to become successful readers and financial stewards. The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, along with Governor Hogan and the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives is asking for Marylanders to join them in advocating and celebrating reading and financial literacy during October.

[09/19/19]   Family literacy is one of our goals. Do you know that a mother’s education level is the greatest determinant of her children’s future academic success, outweighing other factors, such as neighborhood and family income.

[09/19/19]   Some interesting facts about Adult Literacy:

1. In the U.S., over 40 million adults have low literacy, including 20% of adults with a high school diploma.
2.Two‐thirds of U.S. adults scored at the two lowest levels of proficiency in solving problems in technology‐rich environments.
3. 64% of adults with low academic skills are employed.
4.Every year, over 2 million students drop out of high school in the U.S.

This why we are here helping to build Carroll County for the future of all of us.

[09/19/19]   National Adult Education and Family Literacy Literacy Week is September 22-28, 2019

[09/04/19]   Join us in celebrating International Literacy Day, September 8. It is also Grandparents Day - read a book to child or have your grandchild read to you. Enjoy.

What a great time we had on July 19 at Quail Valley Golf Course for the annual Literacy Council Golf Tournament. All of the golfers were ready to go right at 8:00. Mike Kelly's team took first place and Jeremy Rodkey's team took second. We play best ball and there are plenty of mulligans to purchase so a good time can be had by both the beginner and the more advanced player.

A special THANK YOU to Scott Greenholtz (pictured on the right with his team) for all his work on making this event a success.
