On display concurrently with 100 Years of the Mystic River and the Bascule Bridge is MMoA's annual juried exhibition, Building Bridges! This year's theme was inspired by the centennial celebration of the Mystic River Bascule Bridge, and challenged artists to explore the many ways art can bridge the gaps between people, opening us up to each other and making room for empathy, discovery, and simple observation.
Juror Dayne Rugh, Director of the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, CT, selected 50 works of art in various media that powerfully represented both the physical and metaphorical representation of bridges while drawing attention to themes of connection and separation.
Building Bridges is on display through December 18th!

The fireworks may be over, but MMoA continues to celebrate the Mystic River Bascule Bridge’s hundredth anniversary through December 18!
Come see '100 Years of the Mystic River and the Bascule Bridge,' a special exhibition featuring 60 works of art which depict the historic and artistic importance of the current bridge, its predecessors, and the Mystic River itself.
In addition to paintings, sketchbooks, and postcards from MMoA's permanent collection and archives, dozens of works of art, photographs, and ephemera (including ship models and novelty china!) have been loaned to this exhibition from fellow institutions and private collectors. MMoA would like to thank exhibition lenders the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Mystic River Historical Society, Mystic Seaport Museum, Noank Historical Society, and private collectors Mary Boland and Jonathan C. Sproul.
