Teacher Uses LEGOs To Explain Math To Schoolchildren

This is a great subtle hands-on strategy for teaching math in CTE.

boredpanda.com As if LEGOs weren't enough of an awesome childhood toy, one teacher has found another awesome educational/developmental use for this super-toy – as a math education aid! Alycia Zimmerman, a 3rd-grade teacher in New York, uses them to explain fractions, squares and other mathematical concepts.

If trade school / CTE Education is not an option, as it's availability is still limited, we need to promote college with a "purpose" and "career path"... Not just because it's engrained in our children's mind that they need to go (for just anything) to be successful in life. The cost of college without a clear reason to go is a recipe for lifelong financial failure if the degree doesn't equate to a career path worthy of the expense. It is so sad to see the amount of debt college puts on young adults without fully understanding what that debt means for so many years of their lives. Parents and guidance counselors need to do a better job of stressing this, and lenders need to stop lending money to support degrees that don't equate to employable skills.

[07/17/19]   Vocational Technical Education (VTE)
Framework Revision Project
Summer 2019

The Office for College, Career, and Technical Education (OCCTE) will be revising “selected” vocational frameworks during the summer of 2019, during Phase 1 of a multi-year Vocational Technical Education (VTE) Framework Revision Project. The Department has hired the MA Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA) as the consultant to oversee Phase 1 of the VTE Framework Revision Project. MAVA will work in collaboration with the Office for College, Career, and Technical Education.

The following vocational frameworks will be revised during the Summer of 2019:

Automotive Technology
Carpentry
Dental Assisting
Electrical Technology
Health Assisting
Aviation Maintenance Technology (continuation of work)

Teams are currently being formed comprised of Subject Matter Experts, which include vocational technical teachers, academic teachers, counselors and administrators. SME’s will be chosen based on the identified five vocational frameworks to be revised during the Summer of 2019.

Please note, OCCTE will continue to collect SME Applications, as this is a multi-year project and additional frameworks will be revised during the September 2019 school year and beyond. Please continue to submit SME Applications to Lisa Sandler, [email protected].
