Shelby Davis is an inspiration to us all! We were honored to recently host Shelby and Gale Davis on campus! Please view the pictures and videos from the event!
The college celebrated the work of philanthropist Shelby Davis with special events last weekend. In addition to receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, Shelby (along with his wife, Gale) spent time with Wartburg's Davis Scholars and recorded a podcast with President Darrel Colson. Shelby co-founded the Davis United World College Scholars Program in 2000, which to date has supported more than 10,000 scholars at over 99 U.S. partner colleges and universities. Since 2007, more than 100 scholars have attended Wartburg, and nearly 100 scholars are currently on campus, significantly enhancing the college’s cultural diversity and fostering global understanding.

We are very excited to welcome Mr. Shelby & Mrs. Gale Davis to campus tomorrow! It is a true honor to meet them in person!!🌎
Wartburg will honor philanthropist Shelby Davis with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Saturday, Feb. 15, at a ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum that is open to the public.
Davis is co-founder of the Davis United World College Scholars Program. He and his family have contributed more than $75 million to United World Colleges, a group of 18 schools on four continents. In addition, Davis spends about $50 million annually to fund Davis-UWC scholarships, allowing UWC graduates to attend one of the nearly 100 partner higher education institutions in the U.S. Wartburg first partnered with the scholars program in 2007 and since then has welcomed 218 students representing 82 countries to campus. Ninety-one UWC scholars from 51 countries are currently enrolled at Wartburg.
Davis’s visit was prompted by a request from Josh Voigt, a senior UWC scholar from Ezulwini, Eswatini. After learning that Davis had never visited Wartburg, Voigt reached out to see if the philanthropist would be willing to make a trip before his graduation in May 2020. Within days, Davis responded and said he would come.
“He will only be here for a day, but we are trying to create as many opportunities as we can for students to meet him and thank him,” Voigt said. “The only reason I am here is because of Shelby Davis. I attended a UWC school because I knew it would be a possibility to come to the U.S. because of him. Literally everything I have been able to accomplish is because of him. I don’t know how often he gets to meet the students he impacts, but for me, to say ‘thank you’ is a big deal. This man has invested so much in me, and it changed everything for me.”

For international student Angeline Neo, Wartburg is truly a home away from home. Angeline received an International Women Leaders scholarship from the ELCA and traveled from her native Malaysia to study art and graphic design. On campus, she is involved in several student organizations and works in the Marketing & Communication Office; she designed the Wartburg Chapel's open house posters for Homecoming weekend and also created the "You Belong" logo for a Student Life initiative, which has played a big role on campus. "I was speechless. I didn’t think it would be that big. I thought it was just another small project," she says. "I am proud, and I thank God that he gave me this wonderful gift that I can impact people. I feel like college is a good way to start my life of impacting other people."
Read more about what makes for Angeline at the link, and go to www.wartburg.edu/art to learn more about Wartburg's art program. 🎨

When it comes to servant leadership, the first word that comes to mind is sacrifice. It is without a doubt that great leadership often comes with great sacrifice. It is the most challenging and fundamental aspect of leadership. It is not intended for self-benefit but rather an act of recognition for a greater cause that is bigger, and more important than you and I. It is leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. that emulate this term who lived their entire life in sacrifice. Make no mistake to think it is an easy journey, but the result of it, and the outcome changed the world. That is true leadership!
Happy MLK Week from Wartburg College Global Admissions team.

When Arda Delibas '17 came to Wartburg, he never thought he'd climb mountains at a liberal arts college in Iowa. But he did, both literally and figuratively! "During the Warburg West retreat, I climbed the highest 14er in the Rockies— Mount Elbert," he says.
And now, working with Urban Servant Corps, his Wartburg experiences prepared him for life after college: "I found out that leadership comes in many shapes, and everybody will find their style eventually, but serving others is its essential element. Serving others, challenging and believing in myself, trusting what I learned, and believing in God has become the source of my new path in the future." Read more about Arda's story at the link! And share our upcoming visit days at www.wartburg.edu/visit with students so they, too, can discover what makes 🍊

Let's continue with the posts about what to pack when coming to Wartburg!
Residence hall rooms provide a XL-Twin bed, chest of drawers, closet space, a desk, and a chair for each student.
Since you are limited in luggage allowances, you can purchase linens from local stores upon arrival, or purchase "Complete Campus Pak" linen packages from www.rhl.org/wrt. Packages should be shipped to c/o Zafrul Amin, International Student Services Office, 100 Wartburg Blvd, Waverly IA 50677 USA, where we will hold them until your arrival.
The international Student Services Office also arranges periodic trips to Walmart for these and other related items during orientation so students can buy anything they need.
Remember you can decorate your room according to you and your roommate's own style! 🍊🍊🍊
Starting college might be one of the best and most unforgettable experiences in life. However, if you do not plan it well, the transition may result very stressful. Especially, if you are an international student and have to travel a long distance to get to the place that will soon become your new home!
So, what to pack when you are coming to Wartburg?
We recommend to bring your own computer, since for the next four years you will constantly have to research, write, and submit papers!
If you do not have a computer, or your computer gets damaged while you are here, you can check out a laptop for four hours on a first-come, first-served basis at Wartburg College Vogel Library. There are also desktop computers at the library and those can be used anytime, as long as you need them.
