Let's celebrate Lexi Carpenter's study abroad launch in Luneburg, Germany! Here she is, several weeks into her term abroad in this blended town of medieval and modern.

Check out the Study Away drop-in table from 1/15/23 Sunday's Scholarship Day event. It was encouraging to share student stories and images from recent study away experiences - Wartburg West, May Term in Peru, student service trips in Utah, college athletes studing abroad in Chile. May we continue to experience this study away "renewal"! Learn more at

It's official - the Spring 2023 cohort of Study Abroaders have launched! Here we have Maeve and Alexa, fresh off the plane, in front of the Royal Palace in Madrid, Spain. They begin their USAC study abroad experience in San Sebastian next week following this optional Madrid tour offered by the program. I'm sure Spanish torta is on the itinerary!

Wartburg West 2021 student Gisselle Hernandez shares her view and personal perspective from St. Mary's Glacier in Colorado:

"St. Mary's Glacier signifies the importance of leadership and allows me to find my calling through the rock and scenic waters. My experience out in the rocky west has shaped my personal wellness of how we need to protect our natural environment. A view and a hike changed my values of being a well-rounded individual. Colorado has given me a wide range of perspectives to identify the changes we have to be engaged in to preserve and protect our future.”

We end International Education Week with our third place winner of this year's Study Away Photo Contest, Megan McGuigan. Her entry from the Spring 2022 domestic choir tour is a reminder that meaningful "study away" can happen within our own borders!

Megan said “After a week of many concerts and a long drive across the country, my friends and I had the opportunity to walk around Central Park. It was so full of life, movement, and new people everywhere we went. We were so happy to finally be in New York City! It was an incredibly eyeopening experience that I’ll never forget.”

Of course, everyone celebrates Day 4 of International Education Week with a Chocolate Fountain Wall! I had the privilege of spending an October afternoon and evening with Wartburg students Carson and Kenzie in Athens, Greece hearing all about their AIFS study abroad program and daily lives in this remarkable country. They're studying Greek mythology and business through the American College of Greece, thriving in their lovely suburban neighborhood and exploring Athens and beyond. They were excellent tour guides and generous to share their time with their Study Away Coordinator.

International Education Week Day 3 takes us to Spain thanks to Irelynn McMurphy, study abroad Fall 2021 alum and second place AND online popular vote winner of this year's Study Away Photo Contest. Thank you, Irelynn, for both the stunning photo and reflection:
"On a trip to Northern Spain, to the region of Galicia, I visited the small village of Ponte Maceiras. This village dates back to medieval times, when the Celtic people inhabited the region. The stone
bridge (left side of the photo) extends over the Tambre River, and is a landmark of a route of the Camino De Santiago, a pilgrmage that stretches across Europe and ultimately ends in Galicia.

This photo is representative of the historical aspect of my intercultural experience. The land that is modern-day Spain has housed numerous groups, like the Moors, Romans, Phoenicians,
Visigoths, etc., and you are still able to see the physical and cultural impact they had on the land. No matter where I would visit, I could see the influence of cultures unlike the modern day.

Studying abroad introduced me to these places and cultures that I otherwise would have never experienced, and for that, I am extremely grateful."

Day 2 of International Education Week: Worth It to take on the daily challenge and growth of living within a new culture, host family, and academic community? YES! Worth It to deepen your language fluency and confidence? YES! Worth It to explore your host city of Santiago, Chile with your visiting Wartburg professor? YES! Worth It to experience the natural and cultural worlds of neighboring countries of Bolivia and Argentina, as well as your host country of Chlie? YES!

Cheers to Jane and Anna, two of our thriving Fall 2022 study abroaders in Chile. Inspired by their experience? There is still time to talk with Study Away Coordinator, Kathleen Sihler, before the January 15 study abroad application deadline for 2023-24 travel.

In celebration of Day 1 of International Education Week, here is the first place winner of this year's Study Away Photo Contest, from Ryleigh Parrack's Summer 2022 Wartburg West experience:

“The Georgetown Loop Railroad and Mining Park gives a look into some of the best views of the Rocky Mountains. Not only did we
live and experience the heart of Downtown Denver throughout
the entirety of our summer because of Wartburg West, but we were also given the opportunity to branch out and explore the beauty
that Colorado has to offer."

The time is now! Vote for your favorite Study Away Photo Contest entry by October 24 at 22 entries can be found on the college's website or the Luther Hall "Gallery Wall" on the second floor. It's a great way to celebrate our return to the broader world.

Our current study abroaders Kenzie and Carson and clearly embracing the beauty and spirit of their program in Athens, Greece. I feel very fortunate to know I'll get an in-person update on their experience when I visit later this month. They need to be ready for lots of questions from this Study Away Coordinator!
