Our June Policy Spotlight features Margaret Martonosi, the Hugh Trumbull Adams ’35 Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University and former Assistant Director for the CISE Directorate at NSF. Martonosi is long associated with CRA, serving on the CRA Board of Directors from 2009-2017, co-chairing the CRA-WP Board from 2016-2017, and currently serving on the Government Affairs Committee.

In our Policy Spotlight, we asked Martonosi about her time at NSF, what she sees as current challenges facing the research community, and her hopeful vision for the future of computing research.

📝 Last week, CRA led a letter-signing effort involving computing and information technology researchers from a broad cross-section of companies and organizations in industry.

The letter, addressed to the leadership of both Congressional Appropriations Committees, urges them to prioritize robust and stable funding for key federal research agencies — including NSF, DOE Office of Science, and NIST — in the FY2026 budget.

The letter emphasizes that the federal investment in research is the foundation of our nation’s technological leadership, economic competitiveness, and national security, as well as the success of the American computing and IT sectors.

Surprising NSF, its employees and the research community, it was announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development would be taking over NSF’s headquarters. It currently remains unclear where the agency will relocate. This adds insult to injury for NSF and only sows more uncertainty with the nation’s research efforts.

How do you teach computer science in the AI era?

A new article by Steve Lohr for The New York Times explores how universities nationwide are rethinking how they prepare students for a workforce transformed by generative AI.

Among those weighing in is CRA and Computing Community Consortium Director Mary Lou Maher, who discusses the importance of AI literacy and the future of computing education.

The piece also highlights Level Up AI, a National Science Foundation-funded initiative led by CRA in partnership with New Mexico State University and others. The effort brings educators together to build a shared vision for the next generation of computer science instruction.
