Herkese sağlıklı günler dileriz.

Dear Cengiz,

Earlier today, President LeBlanc shared some important news with students, faculty, and staff about his retirement plans. As a member of the GW alumni community, I wanted to be certain that you heard this directly from the university. GW remains laser focused on our core mission of excellence in teaching and research, and we continue our strong emergence toward post-pandemic life. Throughout the celebration of GW’s bicentennial, we encourage you to engage through exciting programs and opportunities that strengthen our lifelong, global, and diverse alumni network. I look forward to continuing to build on GW’s legacy with you.

This past year has been incredibly challenging for our country and for our university. The COVID pandemic has impacted the health, mental well-being, economic standing, and life plans of so many in our community, and it will take time for us to recover fully from these impacts. I am proud that we put health and safety as our highest priority, even though that created some financial challenges and forced some difficult decisions. I am also extremely proud of how our community supported our students and helped them to continue learning as their world was turned upside down.

We are now starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Across the country, cities are relaxing constraints, schools are planning to reopen, and there are many signs of a return to normal. Here at GW, we are preparing our campus to welcome faculty, staff, and students back in the fall for in-person instruction. We are also planning a joyous bicentennial celebration, and a triumphant return to the National Mall for an in-person commencement for the classes of 2020 and 2021.

As we plan for greater normalcy, it is time to think about the long-term future. During the winter break, I initiated a conversation with Board leadership about the university’s future. And at this month’s Board meeting, I informed the Board of my intention to retire from the Office of President at the end of the upcoming academic year. The course of my presidency was disrupted by the pandemic that had to become the priority over the last fourteen months; the next fourteen months need to be largely focused on a transition to the “new normal” and to completing some key initiatives. I concluded that at that time the university would be best served by a President who could then focus on working with all stakeholders on the long-term strategic direction of the university. This timetable also provides the Board with sufficient time to search for my successor.

Our university is strong and our future is bright. I look forward to the coming year as a memorable capstone for our first 200 years and a worthy beginning to our next century.

Raise High!

Thomas J. LeBlanc
