Gallaudet University's Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction & Emergency Planning Program (DEP) faculty and staff members conducted meetings in Japan this winter and were in the country when the earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula on January 1, 2024. One meeting partner - the Japanese Federation of the Deaf - has been coordinating with the Ishikawa Prefectural Association of the Deaf (where Noto Peninsula is located) to arrange relief services in the disaster-impacted area.
Our video describes the current needs, and ways to support the Noto Earthquake relief and recovery efforts. The video starts with Ai signing in JSL along with Japanese captions, followed by Audrey signing in ASL with English captions.

One week ago today! On Monday, April 24, 2023, the International Labour Organization (ILO) hosted a Career Information Session for the IDMA Program and and the Master of Arts Program in Public Administration.
The event took place via Zoom and included a "Davos-Style" interview with four representatives from the ILO's Disability Team of the Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Branch: Eric Stener Carlson, María Aman Joana Zghaib, and Güler Koca. The interview was followed by a presentation by Eric Stener Carlson introducing the ILO's Internship Programme, and concluded with a Q&A session.
The Davos-Style interview addressed five key questions: 1) I understand the ILO is a specialized agency within the United Nations, with its own particular structure, constituents and mandate. What are some of the elements that most distinguish the ILO?; 2) In regards to the ILO, we’ve heard concepts like tripartism, decent work and social justice.Let’s get behind these concepts--What do they mean in reality? What do they mean to you?; 3) Why did you join the ILO? What motivates you to work on international labour rights?; 4) What kinds of topics do ILO officials work on? Is there a certain profile or field of study that ILO officials have?; 5) What’s the most exciting or fulfilling experience you’ve had while working at the ILO? The presentation on the ILO's internship programme described the processes, structure, and pathways to securing an internships. ILO representatives shared tips for successfully navigating the internship application process, and offered to support any questions that Gallaudet applicants might have.
ILO representatives also shared about their own internship and professional journeys, and emphasized the unique position that the iLO holds within the United Nations system as an organization that is both activist and social justice oriented--including advancing systems change within their own workforce.
The ILO's application cycle opens between May 4 and 17, 2023. To apply for ILO internships, visit: https://jobs.ilo.org/

Go Maegan Shanks! We are grateful for your presence and grace in action every day!
Maegan "Meg" Shanks is a hidden gem of the DMV area. She is not only a faculty at Gallaudet University, but she is heavily invovled with project designs and emergency planning for the university. On top of everything she is juggling on campus, she is also a doctoral candidate at American University and her focus is on international education policy making and implementation angled around disability and development, language justice, and intersectonality within the international development field. Besides the academic part, her passion for humanity is beyond words.
