The NFVLC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Evan Stark. Joan and he worked together starting in the 1980s when he was her first expert witness in a case. The rest is, obviously, powerful and paradigm-shifting history. Joan recalls: “I started working with Evan in 1986; he was my expert witness in a custody case. The case took days of hearing. Evan was a bit too erudite for this context, but the judge liked having an expert in his courtroom. At the time, Evan told me that violence was really not the issue in DV, though the abuser had tried to kill my client with a knife. Years later I began to really get it.”He was perhaps the most feminist man on earth and the best friend abused women and DV professionals could have. We are so grateful for his work and will mourn him whenever we mention coercive control. And much much more.
