The use of technology has increased instances of cyberbullying. Individuals with disabilities are at a greater risk of not only being cyberbullied but also of using technology to bully someone else. During this interactive workshop, we will discuss the types of cyberbullying, learn the warning signs, and explore the motivations of those who engage in cyberbullying. Because cyberbullying has created challenges for students, parents, school personnel, and law enforcement, we hope to provide attendees with tips and strategies to address cyberbullying when individuals with disabilities are involved.

Last night, Delegate Carrie Coyner and PEATC came together at Elizabeth Davis Middle School in Chester, Virginia, for a successful information night focused on families of students with disabilities. This event in Region 1 was well attended and provided a variety of breakout sessions that included Special Education and IEPs, Transition IEPs and Self-Advocacy, Early Childhood, and more. Families had the opportunity to have their questions answered and learn more about the supports that can help children navigate their educational journey.

A HUGE shout out to Delegate Carrie Coyner for joining forces with us on this wonderful community event and providing families the opportunity to learn more about PEATC and how to become better advocates for their children.

Thank you to CCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement, all families in attendance, and of course our wonderful PEATC staff for making this event a total success!

Our Story

The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) is the parent information and training center serving families and professionals of children with disabilities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. PEATC promotes respectful, collaborative partnerships between parents, schools, professionals and the community that increase the possibilities of success for children with disabilities.

PEATC began its proud history of building partnerships to create improved educational opportunities for children with special needs with one family, one child and a courageous school administrator. Sometime in 1970, the parents of Danny Chitwood approached Win Anderson, the Director of Resurrection Preschool, about the possibility of allowing their son with disabilities to attend classes with the other students at their school. Following Danny's successful inclusion, Win and the Chitwoods were inundated with questions from other families who wanted information about advocating for their children under IDEA, the new special education law.

Responding to this pressing need, Win Anderson and Steve Chitwood began a remarkable journey that ultimately touched the lives of thousands of families through the creation of PEATC, the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center. Founded in August of 1978 as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, PEATC has become a leader in education support, training and advocacy providing information to families and professionals throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.

Our website provides information to a worldwide audience. At PEATC, we don't just talk about partnerships; we've been living them for over 30 years.
