Our Story

The Western Michigan University College Assistance Migrant Program (WMU CAMP) was founded in July of 2012 through the hard work and persistence of our Principal Investigator, Ms. Diana Hernandez, Director of the Division of Multicultural Affairs. Over the past 7 years WMU CAMP has served more than 200 students with a retention rate of 83.3%. Our students come from all over Michigan and South Texas. WMU CAMP alumni can be found in many industries including engineering, social work, education, physical therapy, computer science, and many more!

CAMP is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Migrant Education. Supportive and academic services are provided to migrant and seasonal farmworkers (or their dependents) who enroll at WMU. CAMP’s goal is to assist students in the successful completion of their first year of college and persistence toward degree attainment. Additional services include studying abroad, career planning and development, intellectual and cultural enrichment, as well as financial assistance based on individual need. Participants also receive follow-up services after successful completion of their first year.

WMU CAMP is under the leadership of Liliana Salas, CAMP alumna, and an outstanding team of individuals who seek the best for all students in pursuit of higher education: Coordinator of Services Ashley Bravo is a WMU alumna and has several years of experience working with CAMP students, Coordinator of Outreach and Recruitment Alexis Mejia is a WMU and CAMP alumnus, and our Administrative Assistant, Maria Mata, is also a WMU alumna and has been with CAMP since its inception. WMU CAMP has an additional 8 Peer Leaders, Program Assistants, and Interns ready to help you in your college journey! You can find us on the second floor of Ellsworth Hall- Room 2231 (In between the parking ramp and the Bernhard Center).
