📅 June 28 – Perfect Numbers Day!

🌟 Why today? Because 6 and 28 — the first two perfect numbers — match today’s date: 6/28! A perfect match for a perfect celebration of these rare mathematical objects.

🏛️ Why "perfect"? Ancient Greek scholars studied numbers whose proper divisors — that is, all positive divisors excluding the number itself — add up to the number. They called such numbers perfect. Take 6: its divisors are 1, 2, and 3, and guess what? 1 + 2 + 3 = 6! Perfect! The next one is 28 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14. Cool, right?

🔍 Perfect numbers are quite rare: the third perfect number is 496, and the fourth is 8,128! Notice how each perfect number is way bigger than the previous one? This makes finding new ones incredibly challenging! Only 52 perfect numbers have been found so far! And the greatest known perfect number has over 80 million digits in it! Crazy!

🤔 We still don’t know if there are infinitely many perfect numbers. Nor do we know if an odd perfect number exists (all known ones are even!). There are still many mysteries in this old area of research!

🔬 Fun fact: A Russian priest named Ivan Pervushin found the 9th perfect number in 1883 using only pen and paper – it had 39 digits! Imagine doing that by hand!

🎯 Challenge time: check yourself that 496 and 8128 are indeed perfect!
