Calling All 5th Graders!
5th grade is often referred to as the golden age of childhood. Students in this grade are poised between two worlds in their development, both physically and emotionally. It is a time when the child’s body is in close to perfect proportion, before the exaggerated, and occasionally awkward growth of the early teen years. It is a time when the imaginative and carefree state that is childhood begins to blend with the increasing sense of independence, critical thinking, and self awareness of adolescence.

At Maui ‘Ohana Collective, 5th grade covers:
- Botany
- Geography of North America
- Western Civilizations including India, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia and Greece
- Fractions and Decimals
- Solving story problems
- Geometry
- Form drawing by hand
- Metric System
- Descriptive Compositions
- Soprano recorder
- Reading musical notation
- Cross stitch
- Pentathlon/Greek games

The Annual Waldorf Pentathlon: A Celebration of Skill, Grace, and History

Every Spring, Waldorf fifth graders across North America eagerly anticipate the annual Pentathlon, a cherished tradition that brings together students from multiple schools for a day of athletic competition and historical celebration.

Hosted by one Waldorf school in the State, this event sees fifth grade classes from three to seven different schools gathering to compete in events that highlight their grace, skill, and determination. The Pentathlon serves as a crowning salute to the fifth grade curriculum in Waldorf schools worldwide, with roots in Greek history and the Spacial Dynamics Movement.

The Pentathlon comprises five events: the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, wrestling, and a relay race. Students are mixed into teams representing ancient Greek city-states such as Sparta, Corinth, Athens, and Thebes. This competition not only showcases athletic prowess but also emphasizes the beauty of form and sportsmanship.

At Maui 'Ohana Collective, our 5th graders will rise to the challenge of the epic Pentathlon.
