Youngstown State University student media organizations dominated the 2024 Society for Collegiate Journalists National Contest, earning a remarkable 25 awards including eight first-place honors across multiple categories.
"I'm blown away by what our student journalists continue to accomplish. It really shows how talented they are and how seriously they take their work," said Adam Earnheardt, The Jambar advisor. "Whether they're covering sports or digging into investigative stories, these students aren't just checking boxes — they're practicing real journalism that matters to our campus and the entire Valley."
The Jambar newspaper, JambarTV and Rookery Radio collectively secured eight first-place awards, six second-place awards, three third-place awards and eight honorable mentions.

What do NCAA bowling champs do on an off-weekend? Multimedia communication-sports broadcasting student and YSU bowler, Ellie Drescher, was joined by teammate Jade Cote, and assistant coach and former YSU bowler Mackenzie Olesky at the PBA championship in Akron this past weekend. Even better? Our own sports broadcasting senior lecturer, Paul Ditchey, was working the broadcast. Paul grabbed these pictures. ♥️💪🐧🏆

We welcomed a full house of future Penguins for YSU's media visit day and workshops. Students learned from three social media experts: Jamie Jamison (who teaches in social media classes at YSU and teaches workshops for the NY Botanical Gardens), and two graduates of our programs - Alyssa Osman and Thomas Malacky. They're all amazing YSU ambassadors. Thanks to Mary Coller and the Williamson College of Business Administration for helping us set this up.
