Targeting MCAS, Massachusetts Teachers Association ties it to white supremacy 18/09/2021

In a statement on Friday, the Massachusetts Teachers Association said “the influence of the MCAS has allowed white supremacy to flourish in public schools, effectively alienating students who have diverse backgrounds and differentiated learning styles.”

Before the MCAS schools gave diplomas to kids that couldn't read or write. How is making sure kids have a minimal set of skills to succeed before getting a diploma "White Supremacy"?

In conjunction with the 2018 DESE History and Social Science Curriculum Framework 8th grade Social Studies became a full year course of Civics, including coursework on news and media literacy. The framework lists a number of topics:
Topic 1. The philosophical foundations of the United States political system
Topic 2. The development of the United States government
Topic 3. The institutions of the United States government
Topic 4. Rights and responsibilities of citizens
Topic 5. The Constitution, Amendments, and Supreme Court decisions
Topic 6. The structure of Massachusetts state and local government
Topic 7. Freedom of the press and news/media literacy
It is up to the district, or in some cases the individual teacher to determine the actual lessons so long as they conform to the framework. Some districts may make up their own courses while others may use a canned package, or a combination of both.
While the topics appear sound, they can easily be twisted to promote an agenda. That will be the topic of our next post.
The entire framework can be found at the following link. The Civics portion begins on page 104.

This post is to provide background information on relatively recent changes in our educational laws we will be addressing in future posts.
On June 26, 2018 DESE adopted a new History and Social Science Curriculum Framework, which set forth skills, competencies and knowledge in history and social science, including civics that students should attain at each grade or grade cluster from prek-12.
Special features of the framework include:
• Content Standards from pre-K–12 outlining what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade or grade cluster in history and social science, including civics
• Standards for History and Social Science Practice, designed to reflect the work of political scientists, economists, geographers, historians, and ordinary citizens
• Standards for reading, writing, speaking, and listening in history and social science and civics, drawn from the 2017 English Language Arts and Literacy Curriculum Framework
• A full-year civics course in grade 8, including coursework in news/media literacy
• Content standards for high school courses, including U.S. History I and II, World History I and II, U.S. Government and Politics, Economics, Personal Financial Literacy, and News/Media Literacy (such courses provide opportunities for students to deepen knowledge and application of civic skills, dispositions, and knowledge within a national and global context)

On Nov 8, 2018 Governor Baker signed Chapter 296 of the Acts of 2018, An Act to Promote and Enhance Civic Engagement. This required the following:
• Each public school serving students in grade 8, and each public high school, shall provide not less than 1 student-led, non-partisan civics project consistent with the History and Social Science Curriculum Framework for each student
• A Commonwealth Civics Challenge, subject to appropriation, will be available to grade 8 students to showcase student-led civics projects
The law also authorizes:
• A Civics Project Trust Fund to assist with implementing history and social science and civics education, particularly in underserved communities, subject to appropriation
• Promotion of youth membership on municipal boards, committees and commissions by the Secretary of State
• A non-partisan high school voter challenge to be established by the Secretary of State in consultation with DESE, to encourage eligible students to register or pre-register to vote and participate in municipal and state elections

Powerful teachers union influenced CDC on school reopenings, emails show 08/08/2021

How much of the "science" the CDC is asking us to follow is being promoted under pressure from teacher's unions?
"The American Federation of Teachers lobbied the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on, and even suggested language for, the federal agency’s school-reopening guidance released in February."
"The documents show a flurry of activity between CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, her top advisors and union officials — with Biden brass being looped in at the White House — in the days before the highly-anticipated Feb. 12 announcement on school-reopening guidelines.

“Thank you again for Friday’s rich discussion about forthcoming CDC guidance and for your openness to the suggestions made by our president, Randi Weingarten, and the AFT,” wrote AFT senior director for health issues Kelly Trautner in a Feb 1 email — which described the union as the CDC’s “thought partner.”"

H.689 is a proposed Massachusetts law that would require every school district in Massachusetts to develop curriculums rooted in the principals of Critical Race Theory. Is your legislator a co-signor?
The attached documents are truly a must read. This quote only touches the surface of this bill.
“Each public school district shall update their curriculum to include the Integrated Cultural Studies recommendations offered by the advisory council. School districts shall use the department’s guidance documents to integrate comprehensive Integrated Cultural Studies education into all applicable core subjects, including but not limited to History and Social Science and English Language Arts and Literacy frameworks, in grades K-12. School districts shall develop a plan to implement Integrated Cultural Studies into their curriculum no later than one year after the advisory council publishes its final report.”
