Innovative Grants Update – 2024

Greetings members of Thunder Nation. You may recall that the school received $1,000 in grant dollars last year and again this year to support educators with innovative classroom projects. This grant, called the Innovative School Project Grant, is backed by Sourcewell. It's been instrumental in supporting various initiatives, including the strategic planning session held in November. I'm thrilled to provide an update on the progress of these projects.

The Long Prairie Grey Eagle Elementary robotics team has been an incredible opportunity for STEM exploration. The elementary robotics team even had the chance to compete at worlds last year. Students have delved into coding, designing and building robot structures, and honing problem-solving skills. These experiences have not only enhanced their STEM proficiency but also fostered positive collaboration and communication among teammates. Thanks to additional funding, we've been able to expand these opportunities to more students, enriching the program with additional resources.

Thanks to the Innovative Schools Project Grant, the LPGE district has launched its own ProStart Team, led by Jill Hanson, the 2023 MN MAFCS Teacher of the Year. The team has showcased their talents at events like the Hospitality MN North Stars of the Future culinary showcase in Nisswa and at the River Center in St. Paul. From crafting delicious desserts to preparing Puerto Rican dishes, students have honed their culinary skills under Jill Hanson's guidance. Their achievements have drawn praise from industry experts, with the American Culinary Federation Chef of the Year expressing admiration for the students' skills and menu. For a first-year team, they've represented our school admirably.

Meanwhile, the second-grade teams have embraced decodable readers, specially designed to help students sound out words and read independently. These books cater to each student's reading level, making reading both fun and enjoyable. They've become a cherished addition to the second-grade teachers' libraries.

The third-grade team has also immersed themselves in reading Yak books and novels, expanding our instructors' ability to differentiate instruction in the classroom alongside WIN interventions. These engaging books are utilized in small groups, fostering a positive reading experience and nurturing a lifelong love of learning.

Additionally, these grant dollars have facilitated the launch of a book club for Grades 4-6. The overwhelming interest shown allowed us to form THREE book club groups this year! Meetings are held once a month for about 30-40 minutes at the beginning of the school day. At each Book Club meeting, students discuss the book they finished reading, engage in a fun reading-related activity (last month it was a Picture Book Scavenger Hunt), and unveil the next book for the month. Thanks to the Innovative Grant, books were purchased for Book Club for each student, along with some book club merchandise like bookmarks & book charms. The students are constantly asking, "When is the next book club meeting?!?" It's been incredibly rewarding to witness students' enthusiasm for reading grow through these initiatives.

These projects underscore our commitment to providing enriching experiences for every student every day and empowering our teachers to innovate in the classroom. As we continue to harness the support of grants like the Innovative School Project Grant, we eagerly anticipate further enhancing the educational journey of every Thunder Nation member.
