The intersection of forensic nursing and AI technology is revolutionizing the way justice is achieved for victims of interpersonal violence. With a $5.3 million donation, Associate Professor of nursing Kat Scafide, Professor of Health Informatics Janusz Wojtusiak, and Associate Professor David Lattanzi of the College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University have developed a prototype of an AI-based mobile app designed to accurately capture and document bruises. The app records clinically sound and legally reliable images, ensuring usable evidence of injury.

Felicia Baez-Smith’s, MPH ’19, knows the value of connection. As a student and early professional, her instructors and mentors nurtured her skills and helped prepare her to enter the workforce. Now, as a public health professional, Baez-Smith has made a career out of uplifting the health and well-being of communities across Virginia. Since her graduation, Baez-Smith has served as an opioid outreach coordinator, a COVID-19 health educator, mental health advocate, and more.
Baez-Smith was also recognized by the George Mason Black Alumni Chapter on the 2025 Forty Under 40 List.
