It may look like a bunch of letters, but DNA provides a guide for biology that is teaching us about how many rare diseases evolve after even one small change among the billions of characters. 🧬🧐

We’re launching a new research center in collaboration with the Allen Institute and UW Medicine that will build new technologies to record the histories of all the cells in an entire organism using DNA. This research hub will uncover how cells are impacted by their environment or other stimuli (think mutation of a specific gene or an infection). This will open new windows into understanding life at a molecular level and help scientists pinpoint the early causes of disease.

In addressing the crowd of stamp collectors gathered for the release ceremony, Siwanowicz said he hopes his images inspire wonder, curiosity, and investigations into the natural world – just as biological images did for him as a young child.
