A special thanks to the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) and the Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS) for conducting a “Competitive Applicant” Q&A session for our staff.
Dozens of MedScribes alums have attended Campbell’s DO and PA programs over the years, and we’re looking forward to even more applying in the future.
Here are 10 take-aways from last night’s session:
1. Apply as early as you are able
2. Interact with the program throughout your application process
3. A greater emphasis is placed on more recent grades, don’t let poor grades early in your academic career stop you from applying
4. Add all of your experiences to your application, not just healthcare experiences
5. Don’t sacrifice grades for experiences [we say this at MedScribes too, school comes first]
6. Scribing (in-person and virtual) is considered hands on patient care at Campbell’s PA program, but check with the other programs to which you are applying to confirm
7. Ask your letter of recommendation writers: “How strongly can you recommend me?” It’s quality over quantity
8. Standardized tests are in flux across higher ed, confirm with the programs to which you are applying how they are handling standardized tests
9. Journaling as a scribe, with general case information (no specifics/identifiers) can help you reflect back when writing your personal statement and prepping for interviews
10. Interview pro-tips: Check your tech set-up with admissions a day or two prior. Ensure your camera works, your background, lighting, and sound are ideal, and that your call platform is updated. Have a backup plan and don’t be late

MedScribes is highlighting Oliver Eisenbeis, chief scribe of our ENT team! We had a little interview, during which Oliver taught me a lot about what he does on a day-to-day basis, what the ENT experience is about, and how relevant ENT is to other fields of medicine!
For those interested in the basics of the ENT field or seeking to join MedScribes: a concise overview of the facets of being a scribe on the MedScribes ENT team, from whom you follow, to the general hours, to the importance of such a position at UNC ENT!
If you want to introduce yourself to the workflow of a clinic professional, working as a scribe is a great way to do just that while contributing to meaningful patient experiences. Apply at www.medscribes.com/careers/ !
Thank you to Oliver Eisenbeis, ENT chief scribe, for letting me extricate information about the field amd team out of you!
Part 2 highlights some easy actions you can take to prevent hearing and speech problems and recognize difficulties if they do develop - it is never too late to start these. Happy belated Better Hearing and Speech Month from MedScribes! Given the impact of hearing and speech conditions on people of all ages, and the experiences our scribes have had working with the UNC ENT division, we wanted to start (and quickly wrap up, since it is June) a 4 part series: 1) introducing hearing/speech pathology, 2) providing advice on hearing/speech well-being drawn from our UNC ENT scribe team, 3) describing the UNC ENT scribe role for prospective applicants, and lastly 4) highlighting the UNC ENT scribe team and their standing chief's journey as a scribe and leader. And last, but certainly not least, of the Assante-MedScribes team: Megan!
“Hi, my name is Megan Assante and I’m a senior scribe and trainer at REMA! Working at REMA has been an awesome experience, providing me an opportunity to learn from the providers and gain clinical experience, while also being able to teach others. I will be applying to medical school for the 2023 cycle, and I feel that scribing has provided me with insight on the evaluation and medical decision making process used in the emergency department. “
We are so grateful to have you on our team and are wishing you the best of luck in next year’s application cycle! 🩺
Next up in the Assante family is the one and only, Cheryl Assante. Keep reading to learn more about Cheryl’s journey at MedScribes!
“My name is Cheryl Assante, I’m currently the Education Specialist for MedScribes, and a scribe and trainer at REMA! Throughout my time with MedScribes, I have had countless opportunities to learn from our providers, and to pass on that knowledge to incoming scribes as Education Specialist and trainer. Not only have I learned facts about various clinical presentations, medical documentation, and ER work-ups, but I’ve also strengthened my passion for medicine. I will be attending Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine in August 2022, and I am confident that my experience with MedScribes will allow me to excel as a student and future physician.”
We wish you the best of luck as you start medical school in the fall, Cheryl! Thank you for all you have contributed to MedScribes 🔶🐪🩺
Happy Hump Day! Today we are starting a series featuring a special family that has worked at MedScribes. The Assante family has had THREE siblings join our team over the years and we are happy to be able to celebrate their professional growth and success. Today, we will start by featuring Robert Assante and his experiences with MedScribes.
“My position as a REMA scribe gave me an invaluable opportunity to observe firsthand, the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, consisting of medical providers, nurses, and numerous other emergency department staff. Learning how to format and construct medical documentation early on, has served me well in medical school and made the transition from scribe to student easier. I highly recommend scribing prior to pursuing your graduate studies and there’s no better team to be a part of than MedScribes.”
Thank you for all of your work, Robert! We wish you success on your journey as a medical student at Campbell 🐪🔶
Today is National Doctors’ Day, a day for us all to say “thank you” to the Physicians in our lives for answering the calling of medicine.
But this year, it is more than that.
As the world gets back to normal and we begin to put this tragic chapter behind us, many will forget the sacrifices that Doctors made for their patients, staff, and colleagues. But we will not.
The last two years have pushed healthcare to its limits. It swayed, it bent, but it did not break because Doctors helped to hold the line.
To the Physicians: Please accept our sincerest thanks. Know that you are appreciated and valued, and that you are making a real difference through your work.
