Hello ACADIA Families,

We are reaching out to you to outline our next steps as a school community. Our team is connecting with staff and families today to assess the wider impact of the mass shooting in our community and our needs moving forward. ACADIA will be closed tomorrow Friday, October 27th. After communicating with local law enforcement, it is clear that closure will allow for us to be best prepared to safely receive students on Monday. At the time of writing this, Lewiston maintains a shelter in place order. Our first priority is to maintain the safety of our students, staff, and families. We implore families to stay indoors and heed all requests by local government officials and law enforcement. We are incredibly grateful for our first responders.

Next Steps for ACADIA

Counseling: On Monday, ACADIA will be partnering with our counseling provider to have grief counselors available to all students and staff. The specifics of this support are still being finalized by our team.

Resources for Home: Many students will feel overwhelmed by this event, leading to feelings of helplessness, confusion, and grief. Included here (https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-safety-and-crisis/school-violence-resources/talking-to-children-about-violence-tips-for-families-and-educators) are some resources for having developmentally appropriate conversations with your children.

Displacement and Reunification Site: Auburn Middle School: If you have questions, concerns about loved ones or are missing loved ones you can go to the Auburn Middle School or contact LPD for more information.

Safety Assessment: Our team will continue to review and adjust our school safety plans. Although we hope for the best, we must always be prepared for the worst. ACADIA currently maintains comprehensive safety and security plans for active shooters and other external threats. ACADIA student and staff safety is our number one priority.

It will take a long time for our community to heal. Words can not properly convey our grief as we learn about the impact to Lewiston and ACADIA. Please know that we will always provide a safe and supportive environment for your child to grow. The days ahead may seem dark, but we will come back stronger and together.

Please do not hesitate to contact me (502-649-8035) if you have any needs. We are here for you and your family, now and always.

Take care and be safe,

Casey Baugher, Executive Director

ACADIA Families,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year. We are pleased to have your child(ren) join us for another great year at ACADIA. It has been a very busy summer as we prepare for students and staff to return. There are several areas of improvement and redesign for the 23-24 school year that we are pleased to share with you:

New Staff: We have several new members of our teaching and support staff. We look forward to introducing the new members of the ACADIA team at our open house!

School and Spatial Redesign: You may have noticed a lot of movement around ACADIA this summer. Although most of our classroom spaces will remain functionally similar, you’ll notice some new look spaces. The Nest (front office area) was redesigned this summer to allow for greater student flow during high traffic moments and provide greater forward facing access to the front doors for staff. We also completed a new dedicated teacher work space and staff conference room; this allowed for us to open up other common spaces in the building for student instruction and support.

Security Improvements: We are finishing installation today of our new security cameras. We now have 24 hour access to the interior and exterior of our building. Following last year’s safety assessment, this was determined to be a key need for staff and students.
Please see the information included below regarding open house, start dates, and enrollment.

Open House: Please join us next Tuesday, August 29th from 4:30-6:30 p.m. for ACADIA Open House. This is a great time to connect with your student’s teacher and meet some of our new staff. Each classroom teacher will have classroom specific information available that day for you to take home and review.

FDOS/School Calendar: The first day of school for students in K-6 is Thursday, August 31st. Pre-K students' first day is Tuesday, September 5th. Please see below 2023-2024 school calendar.

Enrollment/Openings: We do have a few spots open in grades 3, 4, and 5. Please email Heather Grenier ([email protected]) if you have questions about open spots or wish to schedule a tour.

We are grateful that you have chosen ACADIA for your child’s educational journey. Our team is dedicated to providing the most dynamic and dignified experience for all of the students we serve. Please take these last few days of summer to have fun and make new memories. We are looking forward to the start of the year!

With Gratitude,
Casey Baugher, Executive Director

We are halfway through the Community Vote for the 2023 Winterkids Downhill 24 Outdoor Fund!

The Vote will close at 11:59 p.m. on July 28th. Check out the photo below to see our rankings. We are currently sitting at 206 votes in the first place school is at 637. If all of us share this with friends and family, I know we can get into the running! Think of the opportunities this will give our kids to be active in winter, the most sedentary time of the year. Plus, if they enjoy the new outdoor skills, they learn, they will be able to share those skills with you! The whole family benefits! And don’t worry if you don’t think we can meet first place, there are 10 different levels of Grant. We could win so while $10,000 would be amazing we could still do something interesting with some of the smaller prizes, so get out those votes guys!

WinterKids Downhill 24 Outdoor Fund We strongly encourage you to vote in all three categories. Please take a moment to get to know all of our nominees make a note of those that truly resonate with you and are making a difference in your community. WinterKids Downhill 24 Outdoor Fund 13/07/2023

Winter can be a tough time to stay active, but it's important for kids to get exercise all year round. That's why we're asking for your help to vote for the Winterkids grant that will fund winter activities for kids in our community. To those who have had the opportunity to vote already, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The grant could provide funding for things like skiing, snowboarding, sledding, sowshoeing, ice skating, geocaching and more! Our hope is to use the money to purchase equipment to be stored at Lisbon Parks and Rec's Beaver Park. We would then be able to set a schedule where our students are bussed, hopefully two grades a week, every week, to Beaver Park, to enjoy winter activities. However, this equipment would also be available for the public to use for free! So, say it's a gorgeous winter day and you'd love to try showshoeing but just don't have the equipment. Head on over to Beaver Park and give it a try! Should we get so lucky as to win, we would share more information about exactly how that works, but we can't win if you don't vote!

We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be active, regardless of their family's income. That's why we're asking for your vote to help us make this grant a reality. Don't forget, anyone can vote so share this with your extended family, friends, coworkers, everyone! A few students had asked if they could vote as well, and they absolutely can! Our partner at Winterkids assures me anyone with an email address can participtate, even our own students. As usual, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns, we're always happy to help!

WinterKids is distributing $50,000 in grants to help organizations across Maine get kids outside! Your vote can make a huge difference. We at Acadia Academy have applied to be recipients of this grant and your vote will be what decides if we get some of these funds. We plan to use the grant in conjunction with Lisbon Parks & Recreation’s Beaver Park to purchase outdoor equipment, such as snowshoes, sleds, cross-country skis, boots, and poles to provide opportunities for our kiddos to get outside during the cold months. We’d also like to place some geocaches at Beaver Park. These resources are ones that will benefit not only our school, but also the community members of the town of Lisbon and their surrounding towns! Click the link to vote, and share on your social media websites because the more votes we get the more likely we are to win!

WinterKids Downhill 24 Outdoor Fund In honor of the 10-year anniversary of the WinterKids Downhill 24, WinterKids created the Downhill 24 Outdoor Fund to help get even more kids outside and active across Maine and beyond. This fund will help to address the barriers to healthy outdoor activity, including but not limited to equipment, c...
