Karabeth Souza, a rising 12th grader, pictured here with her dog Nash, has a rare disease called X-Linked Hypophosphatemic Rickets (XLH), which affects 1 in 20,000 people and is characterized by low phosphorus levels in the blood. Patients like Karabeth experience various symptoms, typically affecting their bones and teeth.

Diagnosed at 15 months old, Karabeth spent many years feeling different, especially being short in stature and having scars from multiple knee surgeries. That changed when she met Nash, who also had Rickets. In writing her book, Karabeth aimed to bring hope to those living with XLH or any other rare disease, letting them know they are not alone. She hopes others can find their own Nash too!
