National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day for learning and reflecting on the legacy of in Canada. (There should be a worldwide day, IJS.)
Residential schools were government-run and church-run institutions where indigenous children were taken from their families and abused.
Residential schools operated in all Canadian provinces and territories except Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. The last residential school closed in 1996.
In the United States, the Civilization Fund Act started the era of assimilationist policies, leading to the residential schools, which lasted from 1860 to 1978
Residential schools were created to be places of assimilation, contributing to a general loss of language and culture
Children were forced to attend and sometimes resorted to what would now be called kidnapping.
Many of these children died from homesickness, working accidents, uncontrolled diseases and attempts to escape.

Study smarter, not harder.
Here are six tips your child can use to study smarter and not harder.
#1: Work in blocks of 20 - 25 minutes and then take a break.
Set the timer for 20 or 25 minutes and focus on one task until the alarm goes off. Upon completion of the session, check off a Pomodoro and record what you completed. Take a 5-minute break to refresh your concentration. If your child has a learning difference r trouble concentrating try 15-minute sessions instead of 20 -25 minutes.
#2: Create a study space.
Find a comfortable place where your child can work with few distractions. Use this as a quiet study space away from noise and movement where your child can clear his or her mind and focus.
#3: Use pictures and diagrams.
Encourage your child to use diagrams, charts, and mind maps to link information. Help him or her remember things by creating pictures in their head and drawing pictures rather than writing everything. You could also guide your child to picture a film in their head as they are reading.
#4: Focus on one thing at a time.
If your child finds it difficult to focus on studying, have them write down everything that distracts them on a piece of paper, then put it away until they're finished studying.
#5: Exercise.
Exercising will boost your child's brain activity by increasing alertness, attention, and motivation. Next time your child decides to take a break between studying subjects, have them take a walk or do any type of movement instead of sitting around.
#6: Know your child and what works for them.
Everyone works differently, and it may take some time to get to know how your child works best. Consider taking notes on what works for them and what doesn’t.

Teach your child how to correct themselves when they make a mistake. If you practice step #2, you can demonstrate how to fix your own errors.
The answer to yesterday's puzzle was #1, decoding skills. Practicing basic decoding skills can significantly improve word recognition skills.
Here are 3 steps you can use to practice decoding:
1️⃣ Identify the vowel.
Have your child identify the vowel/vowels and the sound that they make before he reads the word.
2️⃣ Make "on purpose" errors of your own to help your child catch your mistake.
Misread the word, ask your child if you read it right, and then ask him to help you correct your mistake. Students LOVE it when their teachers make mistakes.

1. Make writing a daily habit.
Writing daily helps you discover your own thinking, hear your ‘written voice,’ practice and fail without risk, practice and succeed without risk, as well as practice, practice, practice to gain the fluency needed to easily translate thoughts to the page, all the while increasing the likelihood of producing better writing.
2. Use the writing process.
Good writing requires coming up with ideas, reviewing and organizing them, putting them into a cohesive written work, revisiting your work, editing it, and revising it to make your words stronger. These steps are known as the writing process.
3. Learn from your favorite stories.
The books we read influence our tastes and can often have an impact on our writing style. By reading you can learn how famous writers form their sentences and story structures and how they handle dialogue.
