Dumas Middle School gifted and talented students attended the unveiling of the John H. Johnson statue recently at the Delta Heritage Trailhead in Arkansas City. Johnson, a native of Arkansas City was the owner of Johnson’s publishing company and owner of Ebony and Jet magazine.

Dumas native, Susan Holley Williams was the sculpture and is seen with her teacher while she was at Dumas, Ms Joy Hudson.

Dumas students not only witnessed the unveiling, but spent the day touring the Johnson home, sketching, sampling and learning history about traditional southern foods. Not part of the original tour, the students even got to meet Arkansas basketball legend, U.S Reed who talked to the kids about his half court shot in the NCAA tournament in 1981 and took a moment to encourage the students to always do their best.

It was a great educational day for the students!
