Self-Care and Student Stress Study 04/08/2025

Sharing a request for participants!

I am conducting an IRB-approved research study to investigate the relationship between clinical psychology doctoral programs' messaging about and incorporation of self-care and students' perceived stress levels. Additionally, this study aims to get a better understanding of the relationship between different variables encompassed under doctoral students’ perceptions of their programs’ self-care culture.

To be eligible to participate in this study, you must be a graduate student currently enrolled in an APA-accredited clinical psychology PsyD program and presently participating in a clinical practicum and academic coursework. Participation in this study will take approximately 20 minutes of your time, and upon full completion of the study, you will have the option of entering into a raffle for a $50 gift card to Amazon.com. You will find more information and the complete consent form upon clicking the screener link below.

ISPP Community Update 9/25/24- Posted on behalf of Dr. Horvath

ISPP Community -

As I have shared in other messages, I make an intentional effort (as much as I can!) to focus on hope. So when I heard recent news that the public health data show a sharp decline in overdose-related deaths, I felt compelled to share the news. After four consistent years of steady increases in overdose deaths, the data in 2024 show a rapid decline in overdose deaths. These deaths are still way above rates from 2019 and earlier (reflecting the increasing use of poisonous chemicals in street drugs), but a 15% decline, as reported, means about 20,000 lives are saved.

Researchers don’t know yet exactly why the declines have occurred, but increased awareness, availability, and use of naloxone are likely prime factors. To me, this is a great hope. And not just hope in the wishful thinking sense – but hope through action. Advocates and educators have worked together to increase awareness of naloxone, to promote acceptance and use of the medication, and to have it readily accessible in many places. Check here to see where you can find it free in Cook County. And now, instead of demonizing or chastising people who use drugs, we are offering life-saving medications: Treating people as humans - and acting with hope.

And speaking of acting with hope…. Don’t forget to register to vote! See the attached flyer for the link to register to vote in Illinois. The deadline to register is October 20th!

And now, news, reminders, and updates:

ISPP Community Update 9.17.24

ISPP Community -

Happy Mexican Independence Day! Yesterday, September 16th marked the 214th anniversary of the start of the Mexican War of Independence. I hope folks enjoyed seeing or participating in the celebrations of Mexican pride that took place across the city, honoring the country’s rich culture, history, and ongoing legacy. Independence Day also kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month - check out some of the local happenings and events to recognize, honor, and celebrate the month here.

And in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I wish to highlight a pioneering Latina psychologist – Dr. Melba Vasquez . I imagine many know of Dr. Vasquez – she is a former APA President – the first woman of color and the first Latina to serve in the role (in 2011). Dr. Vasquez was a first-generation college student and a member of the first cohort of the APA Minority Fellowship program, which may have helped launch her interest in professional leadership roles. She co-founded the APA Division 45 and the National Multicultural Summit; she has written extensively in the areas of ethics, self-care, and multicultural therapy, and less than a year ago, she was appointed President of the American Psychological Foundation. Dr. Vasquez’s career is filled with examples of how she broke barriers, participated in social justice advocacy, excelled in leadership roles, and earned recognition for her many contributions to the profession.

While Dr. Vasquez is certainly not the only Latine psychologist in the US, she is part of an underrepresented group. According to the 2021 APA workforce data, just under 8% of psychologists in the US identify as Hispanic, well below the 19.5% in the US general population. So we have work to do! With intentional effort, we can attract, train, and retain Latine psychologists in the US. We can build a workforce that looks like the communities that we serve.

And now, news, reminders, and updates:
