Juneteenth—a day of celebration and remembrance—has become a vibrant expression of freedom, resilience, and unity. Teaching children about its meaning builds pride, belonging, and opens the door to important conversations about history and justice.
Here is an activity you can do with your child to teach them more about this day:
➡️ Share pictures of flags from different African countries along with the Juneteenth flag.
Explain the meanings behind the Juneteenth flag, adopted in 2000:
⭐ The star represents the state of Texas and the freedom of African Americans in all states.
💥 The burst around the star represents a new beginning for Black Americans.
🌈 The arc represents a new horizon with opportunities and promise.
🎨 The red, white, and blue colors serve as a reminder that the enslaved and their children are free Americans.
Provide art materials for the children to make their own freedom flags—encouraging them to express their dreams, values, and what freedom means to them.

“Building confidence is not about removing the bumps in the road, it’s about helping children believe they can get over them.”
Dr. Mike Sherman, licensed clinical psychologist and Kiddie Academy® Life Essentials® Curriculum Advisory Council Member, shares how our reactions shape the way children build resilience and self-esteem.

Why Building Confidence In Our Children Means Looking Within Ourselves
Confidence doesn't grow from doing things we already know how to do, it grows from the process of attempting something difficult and working through it.
