Operating as usual

Fellow Poet Parents,
I hope this message finds you well and that you are all preparing for a delightful summer. It has been some time since my last update, and I understand that many changes have occurred within the Wittier College institution following the publication of the Los Angeles Times article.
To the best of my knowledge, I want to share some of the recent developments.
Firstly, it has come to my attention that there has been a significant decline in enrollment. While exact statistics are not available at present, it is evident that the institution has faced challenges in this regard. Furthermore, I regret to inform you that a number of esteemed professors have chosen to depart from the institution. This exodus of faculty members is undoubtedly a loss for Whittier, as their expertise and dedication have contributed significantly to the education and growth of students. Please note that I do not possess official figures; rather, I rely on what I’ve read in the LA Times news for the information I present.
Additionally, I am deeply saddened to report that the Vice President and Dean of Students will be leaving. This individual has been a beacon of support and care for all students, and her departure is undoubtedly a loss to the Whittier community. I and those of you who have reached out to her are grateful for her impact on students' lives.
Finally, the President has tendered her resignation, effective this summer. While I currently have limited information about this decision's circumstances, I can only surmise that more details will come in due time. The President's message was sent to the Whittier College website this morning, May 12th, 2023.

Warm regards,

What is going on at Whittier college and the LA Times article?

Hi all, in light of some extremely unfortunate news, we wanted to let all of you know that a student passed away in Ball Hall at Whittier College on Sunday, February 13th.

Students were sent out an email the same day with details and instructions based on their living situation on or off campus. Classes were cancelled yesterday, February 14th.

Today classes will resume. There are no other details to release at this time. Our condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.

Hi all! Move-in is just around the corner and here’s your reminder to have your students check their emails!! There is plenty of move-in information that has been sent out.

Please be conscious of the new mask mandates that state you’ll be required to wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.

If you plan to help your student move-in, you MUST fill out a visitor form as Housing and Residential life will allow no more than 3 guest per every student and all must fill out the visitor forms due to the COVID regulations.

See y’all real soon!

Only 50 Students housed this FALL 2020

August 4, 2020
President Linda Oubré updated the community this week on Whittier College's updated plans for fall in light of new COVID-19 guidelines.
Dear Whittier College Community:

As we informed you previously, Whittier College has been waiting for official guidelines from the state of California to finalize our campus reopening plans for fall 2020. While we have not received guidelines from the state, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) has now released draft guidelines for the reopening of institutions of higher education (IHE).

LADPH is adopting a staged approach—based on science and public health expertise—to allow IHE to slowly reopen. However, due to recent increases in COVID-19 cases and related testing and hospitalization rates in Los Angeles County, LADPH is urging colleges and universities to "have plans in place to continue with distance learning.” Moreover, in the absence of updated state guidelines, colleges and universities in Los Angeles County are not yet permitted to open for in-person learning or housing of students.

With the goal of providing clarity for students and families to adequately prepare for the quickly approaching academic year, College leadership is announcing that for fall 2020 all courses will only be offered remotely (with possible exceptions—see the FAQ for more information). Additionally, on-campus housing will be extremely limited.

Housing will only be available for international students and students who anticipate facing housing insecurity in the fall. Students who have not previously reported anticipated housing insecurity may request on-campus housing by completing this form by August 9. Whittier College expects to house approximately 50 students on campus this fall.

Please note all other prior approved housing assignments will be held for students for an anticipated winter opening if public health restrictions are lifted. Any deposits made toward fall housing will be credited to students’ accounts.

We understand that this is a disappointment for students who are eager to resume on-campus activities. Our goal is to continue providing all our students with engaging, personalized, and interactive academic and student life activities that define the Whittier College experience.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available. Please check your email regularly and visit the Whittier College Moving Forward site for the latest COVID-19 updates—we will be updating FAQs and other content on the site regularly.
