Spotify support buckles under complaints from angry Neil Young fans 29/01/2022

Spotify support buckles under complaints from angry Neil Young fans

An interesting example of activism is taking place in the news in real time. This week, legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young demanded that his music be pulled from the music streaming service Spotify due to misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines and treatments that was presented by the Spotify-exclusive podcaster, and comedian Joe Rogan. Young’s music has been pulled from the service, and a Young contemporary, Joni Mitchell, has also pulled her musics.

Young’s stand has made international news and sparked a lot of debate on many subjects. Some argue that Rogan can say what he wants based upon his Constitutional right to free speech; however, that only applies to public forums and government suppression, it does not apply to Spotify’s decisions.

Spotify and other services are private companies and their platforms are privately owned. Spotify is not required to give Rogan or Young or anyone else a microphone- the owner of the platform decides who is heard there.

Spotify makes millions in advertising dollars from their content. Advertisers pay premiums to have their ads placed next to popular music and within well-known podcasts. There is a lot at stake here.

Regardless of how you feel about the issue, Neil Young, or Joe Rogan, this is a case study in activism. As consumers either flood toward or away from Spotify over this issue, we can observe economic pressure being applied to make change.

UPDATE: In the very short time (just a few days) since Neil Young and Joni Mitchell have pulled their music, Spotify has lost 2.1 BILLION in market value. A Penn Live article explaining this is linked in the comments.
