Do you really want to pay 40% of your pay to those tutoring companies? 🧐
When I transitioned from the life of a full time Math/Stat teacher at the prestigious and highly ranked West Windsor- Plainsboro School district to starting my online tutoring business as a way to earn income while also being with my children, I did tutor with one of the big name tutoring companies. 4 hours of work and I decided that I don’t need someone to find clients for me- I can do it myself.
2 years before Covid and with no business background, I researched and figured out ways to find clients from all over the US to tutor during the hours I wanted to work. For example, initially when my husband was working night shifts and we were living in the East Coast, my clientele was mostly from the West Coast as I could be working at nights when Pax, my oldest was sleeping.
This was one of the biggest leaps of faith (besides moving to two countries 🤪) I have taken, yet 5 years later, I look back at it as one of the best decisions of my life. People who followed me on my private account used to often ask me when I am going back to work as I was always posting stories with my babies🤩
I am choosing how much I want to work. I am choosing how much money I want to make without losing sight of my priorities- my family, my mental and physical health. I am doing something I LOVE- empowering children and helping them find confidence in their ability to do Mathematics.
If you are interested in how I did this, check out my e-book (Link in Bio) and get started on your solopreneurship journey.
Santhra Thambidurai
Former math teacher at NJ Blue Ribbon district, private math instructor and Numeracy Coach
Operating as usual
Shari Bruyn has taught pretty much every course at Okaw Valley High School in the past 30 years. She went to a Geometry in Construction workshop by two incredible educators: Scott and Tom, was blown away by its potential, sought to bring the course to her high school. Not having the budget for it, she sought Grants from different associations and made the implementation of this course possible. Her students are way more engaged in Math than she can remember because they are directly applying the concepts they are learning in the real world.
Furthermore, she embeds financial literacy in terms of understanding the costs of all the required tools and materials, as well as how to use those tools and materials to produce a finished product which can then be sold for a profit (to at least cover the initial costs).
She is an example of someone who has a passion and is not afraid to seek out the resources and support to take an idea and see it through to completion.

If you have ever taught in a classroom, you know that it is not an easy job. Teachers are undervalued, underpaid and under-appreciated but the impact they have on children is immeasurable. This video is for all teachers but specifically dedicated to the incredible minds I had the privilege of working with, who mentored me, treated me like their own family (home away from home) and who were just incredible educators. These people filled their classrooms with enthusiasm and passion, connected with their students, and worked hard to make the content relevant. Thank you for your service and your hard work. Keep on going! June is almost here! 💕

Alcohol and Stats? What’s the deal?
I’m a math teacher trying to show people WHY MATH is important in their lives.
Who’s heard that saying that “one drink a day is good for your heart?”.
I came across a recent NYT article that I wanted to share as an example of why good stats knowledge can be helpful - not just in your professional work, but also as an informed citizen capable of evaluating deception and misinformation from the truth.

Does this say anything about the future of a college education?
?
My children might be in two decades from now. Do you think the costs of college will continue to rise and that it will continue to be the default path that many of our children will be ushered through to prepare them for a life of earning?
In my latest interview with Michael Leone, the Director of Analytics for Establish The Run, we touched on an interesting topic for me: the importance of a college education for the Sports Data Scientist role he was hiring for.
