You are invited to participate in a research study being conducted focused on the experiences of Band Directors in the United States.
This is a follow up to a study conducted earlier this year which focused on the experiences of female high school band directors. This current study is for any band director, at any level, and any gender identification. If you participated in the previous study as a female high school band director, you do not need to participate again. The results of this study will provide numerical data to determine common experiences of band directors throughout the profession across the United States. The data from this study will also be used to compare experiences with those found earlier this year of female high school band directors in order to determine which are similar and which are different between genders and levels of teaching. The benefit of participating in this study is that you and your story (although anonymously) will be a part of this data collection. The more participants that take this survey, the more accurate the results when attempting to describe the overall Band Director experience in this country.
Participation in this study involves completing an online survey that will take approximately 25 minutes. The survey can be completed on any computer, tablet, or mobile device with internet access. An example of a survey question is “Think about the mentors who you have had throughout your education and career. Of those people, which gender identity is represented the most?”
This study is called "The Experiences of Band Directors: A National Survey Study". You are eligible to participate in this study if you are at the time of the survey at least 21 years old, an in-service music educator in the United States, and teaching band part time or full time at any level (elementary, middle, junior high, high school, college) or a combination of levels.
Participation is completely voluntary, and data collected will remain confidential. There is an optional section at the end of the survey to collect data in the event that you would like to be contacted for a potential follow up. In any potential publication pseudonyms will be used to hide participants’ actual names, schools, districts, towns, or other identifiable information. There are no anticipated risks involved with this research, however, you are able to stop the survey at any time. Withdrawal from survey or study at any time will involve no penalty. You will not be offered compensation for your participation.
The independent researcher conducting this study is Dr. Amy J. Bovin, President of Connecticut Music Educators Association. You may ask any questions you have by contacting Amy at
[email protected] or (203) 240-4735. This survey study was approved with self-exemption status through guidance from the University of Utah due to its similarity to the previous study which received IRB approval.
To participate in the survey, click the link below or copy and paste it into your internet browser. The link will be active through December 31, 2020.

Good afternoon. This is the latest PD.
This is the week! You don't want to miss the 2020 ID ACDA Fall In Service Virtual Conference.
Dr. Heather Buchanan will present sessions titled, "Embodied and Expressive". You don't want to miss her sessions on core balance, gesture, and breath. Additionally, her presentation on Conceptual Programming looks at thematic programming within a live and virtual format.
If that isn't enough you won't want to miss the breakout sessions featuring some of our own ID ACDA Membership, Reading Sessions, and Roundtable Discussions.
On Thursday night, we will have an on-line community sing. Since we can't have our Beer/Rootbeer Choir, we'll be able to sing some of our favorites and see each other.
On Friday night after our sessions, stay with us and perform one of your favorite Karaoke hits. Unleash your inner Freddie Mercury or Cher and share your talents.
See the full conference schedule here:

Registration is free to all ID ACDA Members and College Students. For all others, we are happy to offer this virtual conference for $20.00.

Each of our smaller piano students sets the footrest to their ideal height at the start of her lesson. It reminds students to think about posture and form. Many students now have a footrest at home, where most of the playing is done. It's harder to play with your feet dangling in the air.
On behalf of IMEA and the State Department of Education, we would like to invite you to a 1 hour session via zoom where Robert and Clara Wicks from District 2 will share resources on bias and social awareness in the General Music and Band Classrooms. Joining them will be Sarah Graham from Lewis and Clark State college who will address culturally sensitive repertoire for the Choral classroom. All IMEA members are welcome to join. It will be recorded if you are unable to attend.
Rebecca Martin is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
