Collegiate outdoor recreation program, providing experiences for students, staff, and the community. There are three things that we cannot do without.
People: They are what makes the world go 'round. They're why we're exist. They're what we're passionate about. They are the who that makes the choices. Nature: We believe that the future of our natural world is in our hands. It's up to us to realize how precious it is, how fragile it can be, and what adventures it holds in store for us. We believe that we are responsible for giving back to nature

On Monday May 8th around 2:30 pm, Valley County Sheriff's marine and backcountry deputies responded to a 911 call from a passing motorist who witnessed an overturned kayak in the North Fork of the Payette River south of milepost 89 on Highway 55, which is near Cold Springs Campground. Fortunately, this turned out to be a kayak that got away from its owner and there was no rescue or recovery needed.
We would like to offer a public service announcement to the kayak community that run the rivers in Valley County, or any other area. If you are separated from your vessel and you are unable to safely retrieve it from the river, please have the courtesy to contact the local dispatch center to let them know. Our center, along with two others received multiple phone calls regarding the overturned kayak from panicked passersby with genuine concern for someone's safety. This could've gone bad quickly as most people want to help, regardless of their own safety. As you can see from the photo, this was not a good situation and anyone seeing this would be concerned, warranting multiple 911 calls.
Currently (pun intended) the river is running high and fast, which we know is a huge draw to many kayakers, our resources in Valley County are limited and risking the lives of first responders is something many agencies take into consideration when formulating a response plan.
As always, be safe out there!
