Join Alpine on March 22nd at 7 pm to hear from Dr. Deija McLean on addressing sleep issues in autism. This presentation is free, open to the public, and will cover sleep, consequences for problems associated with sleep, typical sleep needs for children and adolescents, and empirically supported methods of assessing and treating problems associated with sleep and bedtime.

Dr. Deija McLean learned her Ph.D. in School Psychology, with a focus in applied behavior analysis, before completing her pre-doctoral internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute where she provided outpatient behavioral services to children and adolescents with developmental disabilities who exhibited severe challenging behaviors. She is presently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Behavior Analysis and Therapy program at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Great News!!

Update on NJ Bill S905/A1281, which extends the period of time for filing special education due process petitions related to COVID-19 school closures and periods of virtual, remote, hybrid, or in-person instruction.

Governor Murphy signed the Statute of Limitations legislation yesterday!

THANKS TO ALL, it was a great team effort. SPAN, NJCDD, Rutgers Health Education Law clinic, Special Education Practitioners and all of the families that worked so diligently to get this bill passed and signed. We also want to thank the sponsors of this legislation; Senators Ruiz (@mteresaruiznj) and Gopal (@senatorgopal) and Assembly members Stanley (@AssemblymanSterleyStanley), Carter (@aswcarter) and Mukherji (@mukherji) as well as the Governor (@Governorphilmurphy) for signing this bill in the very tight timeframe we had to act.

Great work everyone to support students with disabilities and their families in New Jersey!

On Tuesday, March 8th, join us for a free presentation: Gender Identify and Sexuality in Students with Autism and Other Disabilities. With the emerging understanding that Autistic people are more likely than the general population to identify as LGBTQ, this presentation will help educators understand the breadth of identities among young people and the simple ways we can identify and support Autistic and disabled LGBTQ youth. Trans youth reporting just one supportive adult in their lives were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the last year compared to their peers without supportive adults (Trevor Project, 2019), so it is imperative that we work together to create supports for all LGBTQ young people, regardless of disability. We are proud to host Cori Fraser, LCSW, the Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Center for Autistic Advocacy. She is a multiply disabled, nonbinary licensed social worker and activist.

Good news out of Trenton!!

The Senate unanimously passed legislation I sponsored to help students who missed out on support services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill, S-905, would extend the period of time a parent, guardian, or local educational agency has to request a due process hearing regarding the education of a child with disabilities during a COVID-19 school closure or during periods of virtual, remote, hybrid, or in-person instruction.

It is critically important we postpone the deadline to file a legal claim so we can give parents more time to work with their child’s school district to come up with a learning plan to make up for lost services. Remote learning took a toll on all of our students, but it was especially challenging for students with disabilities. Children who typically would be pulled out of class for physical, occupational or speech therapy or receive other specialized support missed out on months of services.

We just love stories of learning and engagement happening at our member schools. Check out this post from The Newgrange School

You wouldn't know it from all the rain we are getting today, which is melting the one foot of snow we received last weekend, but the "census-takers" in Mrs. McCullough's class canvassed the school and handed out ballots to determine if Punxsutawney Phil would or would not see his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter or not.

It was a close one! Punxsutawney Phil and the majority of Newgrange students and employees felt that six more weeks of winter was the prediction. It was a tight vote (35 to 32), and don't forget that Staten Island Chuck did NOT see it in the same way as his cohort Phil, so we'll have to see.

Most important, though, is that these students went classroom-to-classroom, and encouraged the civic duties of their peers by voting in this election. That's the REAL takeaway with this exercise.

Great job, student ambassadors!
