🌕The Buck Moon is lighting the sky tonight as one of the four supermoons this year! 🌕
July’s full Buck Moon orbits closer to Earth (224,895.4 miles exactly) than many of the other full moons this year, making it one of the four supermoons of 2023!

🦌🌙 The meaning behind the Buck Moon can be found with the Native American Algonquins, who lived east of the Mississippi River. This was a region where deer were widespread, so this name was inspired by the male deer (bucks) which have new antlers pushing out of their foreheads with coatings of velvety fur during this period, Deer lose their antlers yearly, and each part of the antler grows from time to time. In the mid-summer, it reaches its full size with pointed tips and is considered to be a significant part of the annual cycle.

✨July full moons have other names too, inspired by nature, animals and tradition, like Feather Moulting Moon (Cree) and Salmon Moon, Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe). It is important for children to learn science, but also how people perceive these phenomena and identify with them.
