My name is Samantha Herington, and I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer on February, 23, 2022. It was 15 days after my 40th birthday, and 14 days after my first mammogram. A week after my diagnosis, I had a port inserted into my chest. Two days after that, I started my first round of chemotherapy.
Just one month earlier, I was the epitome of health. I ate a healthy diet, had perfect blood work, and worked out 6-7 days a week. I made it to pure barre 2-3 times a week which I had been doing for over 6 years. I couldnโt believe someone as healthy as myself would be dealing with this at such a young age, yet here I was. I have two children,and the thought of leaving them without their mother this early in life was incredibly heartbreaking for me.
Triple Negative Breast cancer is a very aggressive form of breast cancer. Breast cancer doesnโt run in my family, and I tested negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2. I was scheduled for 16 rounds of aggressive Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy. Once I completed that, I had a lumpectomy and had 19 rounds of radiation. I also Cold Capped, which helped me save a significant amount of hair. At the time of surgery I achieved PCR, which was a complete pathological response to chemo. Chemo had terminated the tumor.
I have the type of cancer that has a higher rate of recurrence, but I donโt let that worry me. I live every day to the fullest. I recommend everyone live their life that way and just do things that make you happy! Getting back to doing pure barre was one of those things for me. I remember the day I came back right after I got my port out, and I was so weak. But I was just so thankful to be there, and I was proud of myself for trying.
Make sure you get your yearly mammogram! It might just save your life!

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and discussions with her surgical team led me so reschedule my annual mammogram with her doctors.
My routine mammogram progressed to an ultrasound, then a biopsy and finally a phone call that I had breast cancer! The radiologist had not seen any lumps - but instead he detected some cells โacting upโ in my left breast. And although this was early stage 1 breast cancer, it had already invaded lymph nodes in my left arm. Fortunately I was able to quickly schedule lumpectomy surgery to remove the cancer cells and several lymph nodes. Fast forward thru 31 radiation treatments and 6 years of oral medication, I am now 20 years cancer free. Unfortunately because my momโs cancer was very rare and advanced by the time she sought help, the cancer took her 7 months after diagnosis.
My message to every woman is:
1. Get an annual mammogram! My cancer cells had developed in less than a year since a clean report the previous year.
2. Go to the best possible place for your mammogram and know who is reading the results! St. Lukeโs, Methodist, Texas Womenโs Center are all top notch!
3. Donโt delay if you detect something on your own! The earlier you get diagnosis, the more options you have as to the type of treatment. My oncologist says the most common cause of cancer is โdenial cancerโ!
Pure Barre is an integral part of my cancer free life! Two yeas ago, I had another scare in my right breast but fortunately it was benign. I promised myself at that point that I would get on a healthy road and do my
part to stay healthy. One common place breast cancer can re-surface is in the bones. Strengthening your bones through regular exercise helps combat that. Also fat cells can fuel breast cancer cells to other parts of the body. Reducing my body fat and gaining muscle was also critical. In my almost 2 years with PB I have reduced body fat 8% and gained skeletal muscle mass over 4%. Pure Barre checks all the boxes for a strong body and healthy mental outlook!

"My Pure Barre experience started in 2019. In 2009 I began running races ranging in distance from 5K to 50 miles. That decade of repetitive motion led to a series of overuse injuries, mostly from weakness in my core and glutes. During one of our sessions, a physical therapist I was seeing recommended Pure Barre as because it's a great cross-training for runners. Iโve always enjoyed finding different ways to challenge my body, but a barre type workout is never something I had considered.
It took a while to adjust to a whole different type of motion and movements, but once I got the hang of it I made progress pretty quickly. Four years later Iโm almost five hundred classes in and have never run better. I set PRโs in both the half and full marathon in 2022, and qualified for the Boston Marathon for the first time at age 42. I absolutely believe that Pure Barre has helped improve my muscular endurance, core strength, and well as hips and hamstrings to keep me running well and running healthy.โ"
