Junior Cotillion, with a three year curriculum, is designed to give young people instruction and practice in the courtesies that make life more pleasant for them and those around them; to give them thorough training in standard ballroom dance; and to provide opportunities to practice and enjoy these skills at memorable parties, balls, dinners and events, complete with decorations, refreshments, favors and prizes.
Junior Cotillion places as much emphasis on etiquette, manners and character education as it does on dancing. The social and character education components of the program include rules of proper telephone courtesy, acknowledgments of gifts, introductions, receiving lines, participating in group settings, polite conversation, paying and receiving compliments, sports etiquette, first impressions, dress code for all occasions, manners in the home and in public places, table manners, formal place settings, styles of dining including American, Asian, and Continental, skills involved in being a guest, hostess or host, and many other areas of social behavior. Other topics covered are the ethics involved in the areas of having honor, dignity, respect, honesty, fairness, a caring attitude, accountability, and citizenship. The Junior Cotillion setting encourages young ladies and gentlemen to be comfortable together, make new friends and enjoy themselves. After constant practice in a peer group, young ladies and gentlemen are expected to leave the program with the confidence and poise that comes from knowing the proper etiquette in any social situation. Instruction in dancing and etiquette is given throughout all sessions. NLJC's Dance Program consists of traditional dances such as the Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Shag / Swing, and Waltz; as well as current, popular line dances. Music consists of current top forty hits that have been carefully screened for lyrics and content.
Mission: To act and learn to treat others with honor, dignity and respect for better relationships with our family, friends and business associates later in life and to learn to practice ballroom dance.
Operating as usual
Dear Cotillion Families,
We had the opportunity to sit down earlier this week to talk about the plans for the upcoming cotillion season and would like to give you all an update. We thank you for your patience this past year as we did our best to work through all the impacted aspects of our program to make the best decision for your children and their cotillion season.
We have decided to push our 2020-2021 season back to begin Fall 2021. Despite all the extra safety measures we could take during class- gloves, sanitizer, masks, dancing not in closed position, etc- we remain concerned about the classes being in an indoor space for the full class time. The health and safety of all individuals involved in our program is our number one priority. It is also important to us that we only begin a season that we are confident we will be able to finish and, with cases rising, there is concern that our venues will adjust their occupancy rates in a way that our group will no longer be able to use those spaces. Lastly, we both feel passionately about this program and the social graces it teaches through both the dance and etiquette lessons. With all the adjustments to the way we would teach to keep the students 6 feet apart and not touching, we felt that we would lose a paramount and special part of cotillion and that it would not be the program we had put on in the past. Your children (and you!) deserve all The Woodlands Proper Chapter has to offer at its best.
We want to assure you that your registration and payment for this season is secure and that your child’s spot will be held for next fall. If you have not paid yet, we will not be asking for any additional deposits until this spring.
By pushing our season back until next fall, we have hopes of a more normal season which includes a parent reception in late spring/early summer. So stay tuned!
Please, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to us. We thank you again for your understanding and support.

Here are two great reminders during this time to be kind and show grace on our service workers.
Check out this incredible edition of Manners Minute from NLJC Directors Lydia Holland and Elaine Poitevint. During these times it is so important to show kindness to those that are helping us. Additionally, we also need to be mindful to display courtesy to all people that we come in contact with. Remember #mannersmatter !

We hope this email finds you and your family doing well. We wanted to send another update about our upcoming cotillion season. We have been in conversation over the best way to proceed during these unprecedented times. It is important to us that we plan our season in a way that keeps all our students healthy while teaching the way our program was intended- including shaking hands, polite conversation, and, of course, the dancing.
We have decided to cancel our May Parent Information Night and have rescheduled it for SEPTEMBER 8!
Our hopeful plan for next season is to host our Parent Information Night for interested parents in early/mid September. We would then push back the start of our season to October and have two classes in October, our Year I Fall Ball and our Year II Instructional Meal in November, two classes in December, our parents Dip Into Dancing early January, and our Grand Ball at the end of January. We are working with the church and the country club and will get you these tentative dates very soon.
Our students health and safety is our priority and should we determine it is unwise to hold our classes in the fall, we will push our season back to have a spring season. Our schedule would then likely be two classes in January, two classes in February, a Year I spring ball and our Year II Instructional Meal in March, our parents Dip Into Dancing early April, and our Grand Ball end of April.
When we do start our program, we will be putting into place more measures to keep us all healthy including, but not limited to: hand washing before shaking the directors hand at the start of class, hand sanitizer after handshakes and before refreshments, directors wearing gloves, parent chaperones wearing gloves during refreshment preparations.
Our usual policy is to offer tuition refunds up until July 1. However, with the uncertainty of our schedule for next season, we will be providing refunds up to one month before the season is set to begin.
We do still anticipate full and fun classes! If you know of anyone who might be interested in our program, please encourage them to register early and online at https://nljc.com/n/index.php/chapters/woodlandsproper/chapter/registration/2020-2021 before formal invitations are sent out. Our availabilities are as follows:
Year I ladies: FULL
Year I gentlemen: 15 availabilities
Year II ladies: 10 availabilities
Year II gentlemen: 10 availabilities
We appreciate your patience and understanding. As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. We are very much looking forward to starting when we are able and seeing your young ladies and gentlemen.
